If Honda’s game was to confuse people about the new generation of Civic Type R, then bottom hat. Over the past year, rumors have been circulating suggesting that Honda will make it fully electric, with Honda adding no electrification to the hot hatch – and at all the intermediate points, which seems to be where we are now. The latest rumor circulating on the Web says that it will still be a hybrid.
The rumor comes from BestCarWeb.jp and it indicates that the new generation Type R will be nearly 400 horsepower (298 kilowatts) hybrid with all-wheel drive. According to the publication, Honda will combine the 2.0-liter Type R turbocharged four-cylinder engine with two electric motors. It is similar to the powertrain configuration of the NSX, although it is reversed in the Civic – the gasoline engine will power the front wheels while the two electric motors will power the rear.
The latest speculation contradicts rumors last month that suggested the Japanese automaker would keep the new generation of Type R purely petrol. Again, it was not easy to determine what Honda plans to do with its tailgate. In an interview last month, the senior vice president of Honda Europe said: “No decision has yet been made on this matter,” providing no concrete answer as to what Honda plans.
The current generation Type R powers the front wheels with its 2.0-liter turbocharged engine developing 306 horsepower (228 kilowatts) and 295 pound-feet (400 Newton meters) of torque, which is enough for the 3100 pounds (1406 kilograms)) the hatch. Additional power of 100 hp (74 kW) would make the Type R a completely different beast at the wheel. It is only available with a six-speed manual transmission.

We won’t know what Honda is doing with the Type R until Honda releases official information. Until then, however, rumors will continue to circulate as the Internet speculates on what could be the follow-up to the new Type R by Honda upon its arrival. And we bet Honda likes it. The new generation Civic Type R is expected to arrive in model year 2022, so don’t expect anything substantial from Honda anytime soon.
