Watch The Fastest Ford Mustang Narrowly Beat Slowest Corvette On Track

For some reason, comparisons between the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 and the Chevy Corvette C8 have been appearing since the start of this year. We’ve seen drag races and track battles between these two high powered American sports cars before. This is despite the fact that the Mustang squarely rivals the Camaro.

One of the hottest (and controversial) comparisons between the GT500 and the C8 came out earlier this year. Motor trendRandy Pobst posted an article comparing the track performance of a Shelby GT500 with Carbon Fiber Track Pack and a Corvette Stingray 3LT with Z51 Performance Package – but without posting lap times or a video to substantiate this claim.

Alas, the video of that Motor trend comparison was uploaded to YouTube. It can be several months late, but as they say, better late than never. And yes, we know it’s an apple-orange comparison, but remarkable nonetheless if you’re looking for a sports car in their price range.

As the video we embedded on the top shows, the Shelby GT500, with its supercharged V8 and huge power gap, was faster in a straight line, towering over the Corvette at up to 20 miles per hour. However, the C8’s weight advantage allowed it to be faster in the corners.

Same driver, same circuit (Virginia International Raceway), both apparently fun. The most powerful Stock Mustang finished with a lap time of 01: 59.68, while the base Corvette Stingray clocked 02: 00.96 – a second full victory for the Cobra-badged ‘Stang.

Of note, given the Shelby’s output leverage, that little difference seems like a relative victory for the Corvette. Imagine this race with the Z06 or the ZR1, or even the C8.R, and we all know what the end result would be.

But then again, an apple-orange comparison, nonetheless.
