Watch Ram TRX Launch Control Used On Video For The First Time
Ram dropping a Hellcat V8 in his 1500 pickup was inevitable. Ever since the Rebel TRX concept debuted so long ago, we knew it had to happen, and then the rugged TRX test mules sealed the deal. It remains to be seen whether this power is really usable on the sidewalk, but it cannot be denied that it will at least be fast on the tarmac. At least in theory it should be quick.
We say this because a video recently came out of catchmeoffroad on Instagram that claims to show a TRX using its launch control in a parking lot. Such an environment doesn’t leave much room to function, so this sprint is really just a short rollout. With enough space, Ram says the TRX can hit 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, but to be fair this truck looks a bit slow.
We also see it clearly falter when the revs rise. Maybe it’s just braking torque instead of a full load with launch control? We can only follow what the Instagram post says, so interpret the video the way you want.
Of course, the TRX weighs more three tons. Ram didn’t just drop into the Hellcat and call it good – the TRX’s frame has received all kinds of buffs and buffs to the point where only 25% is shared with the other 1,500 pickups. Even with 702 horsepower (523 kilowatts) under the hood, such a mass won’t accelerate at lightning speed.
There’s also a plethora of heavy-duty drivetrain components underneath the TRX to both add weight and absorb power, not to mention 14 inches of rear suspension travel. This truck certainly dips its tail on take off, accompanied by a hint of tire squeal and the raspy, raspy exhaust note of the V8 that we still find it hard to believe is factory stock. Whichever way you slice it up, the TRX is a loud, proud pickup and with the long-sold Launch Edition, plenty of people are eager to give it a try.
This will happen soon enough, as deliveries of TRX Launch Edition are expected to begin before the end of the year.
