Watch Jaguar XE Project 8 Duel AMG E63 Wagon In Drag Race
There has been a democratization of horsepower over the years as automakers increasingly downsize engines. That’s why it’s no surprise today to find sedans and wagons with supercar performance levels, and this is exemplified by two – the Mercedes E63 S Estate and the Jaguar XE Project 8. The one is a sedan, and the other is a wagon, and Carwow like a new video showing who packs more punch.
The Mercedes packs a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 that develops 612 horsepower (45 kilowatts) and 626 pound-feet (850 Newton-meters) of torque. Power sends all four wheels through a nine-speed gearbox with launch control. The Jaguar uses a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 to produce 600 horsepower (447 kW) and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of torque. The sedan has all-wheel drive and an eight-speed transmission that lacks launch control.
The first test was a drag race. While the Jaguar was the first to leave the starting line, the Mercedes, which weighs almost 300 kilograms more, quickly closed the gap and started to pull away before finishing first, but not by much. The Mercedes finished the quarter-mile race in 11.2 seconds while the Jaguar was on the heels at 11.3 seconds. Two rolling races gave each car a victory, with the Jaguar taking advantage of its higher top speed.
The final challenge Carwow putting the two cars through was a 70 mile per hour (112 km / h) brake test. The Jaguar’s carbon-ceramic brakes helped it stop a shorter distance than the Mercedes’ steel brakes, but not by much, which is surprising when you consider the weight difference between both. While the Jaguar Project 8 is a car specially designed for the track, the Mercedes is a wagon with all the luxury and technology, and both offer similar performance. Talk about a victory for consumers.
