Honda’s most extreme Type R to date, the Civic Type R Limited Edition set a new lap record of 2 minutes 23.993 seconds1 for a front-wheel drive car at the world famous circuit of Suzuka in Japan2.

The Suzuka circuit is a 5.8 km track famous for its high speed baffles and difficult turns, incorporated in a “figure eight” layout which includes a long straight line of 1.2 km which passes over an anterior part of the circuit. With its lightweight components, suspension and steering improvements and sleek driver-focused interior, the Civic Type R Limited Edition has pushed the limits of what’s possible in front-wheel drive on one of the most demanding tracks motorsport.

Widely regarded as a highlight of the Formula 1 calendar, Suzuka is an important test bed for the development of high-performance Honda vehicles and engines since 1962. It was built on the instructions of the founder and president of the company, Soichiro Honda, who said: “Automobiles cannot be improved if they are not tested on the circuit.”

The record lap was achieved by a Type R Limited Edition development car as it underwent its final performance evaluation in February 2020. The development car included the same technical specifications representative of the production version, without any modification or improvement of the performances. The Type R limited edition is now available across Europe.

Hideki Kakinuma, Civic Type R project manager, said: “The Type R limited edition reflects Honda’s dedication to refining the essence and driving pleasure of the Type R as a sports car and exceed the expectations of our customers. The engineering team and I have adopted a racing spirit that has been passed down for generations, and it is this strong passion that drives the evolution of the Civic Type R to become the car ideal sport.

“For this model change, the speed was continued in collaboration with Honda Racing Development (HRD) Sakura, which plays a key role in the development of Honda motorsport. This partnership led to the record for the fastest Type R3 lap on the Suzuka circuit, often described as “one of the largest circuits in the world”.

Only 100 copies of the Type R limited edition will be built for Europe, each benefiting from the driving dynamics and exceptional performance of the standard Type R. The new limited edition includes 20-inch forged BBS light-alloy wheels with high-grip Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tires. These are designed exclusively for exceptional circuit performance but still offer exceptional road performance, while offering a weight gain of 10 kg.

The modified shock absorbers optimize this new combination of wheels and tires and, combined with a recalibrated steering, offer maximum control and return. Adaptive damping system control software now assesses road conditions faster, which improves shock reactions for better handling response and better ride quality.

“Throughout the tests, the introduction of a new two-part floating brake system demonstrated the braking feel and deceleration power exactly as expected by the driver,” added Kakinuma san. “Combined with improved load control performance, the result has been a reduction in overall time braking and exceptional performance in high speed cornering, specifically allowing to transport vital speed through the difficult S curve and the second corner of the Suzuka spoon curve. The impressive Type R limited edition will be available in an exclusive new color, “ Sunlight Yellow ”, and will feature an exclusive Civic crest in dark chrome on the tailgate and a contrasting shiny black roof. The interior of the flagship Civic Type R Limited Edition echoes the sporty lineage of Honda with red bucket seats and a plaque showing the car’s build number. The Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel and a new teardrop-shaped gear shift knob provide the driver with a greater sense of unity with the Type R, even on the highly technical Suzuka circuit. The track-oriented nature of the car means that the infotainment and air conditioning systems are bypassed to save weight, but the rear seats remain to ensure that the limited edition retains the everyday usability for which the Civic is fame. The new tires and wheels, as well as new lightweight components and a stripped-down interior all contribute to a weight reduction of 47 kg compared to the Type R GT variant.

In addition to the new limited edition, the Civic Type R range has been extended to include a Sport Line variant which combines exceptional performance with a more discreet design and increased comfort. All models in the new Type R lineup, including the standard GT, have been upgraded for 2020, offering drivers many performance improvements that helped the limited edition achieve its record ride around the Suzuka circuit.

These improvements include the improved braking system, with two-part floating front brake discs and new brake pads, which increases the car’s capabilities while driving at high intensity.
