Volvo’s Largest-Ever Recall Affects 2.2 Million Cars Globally

Volvo has built its reputation around the safety principle, ensuring that its cars are the safest vehicle in the factory. This has been the case in recent decades, and the innovation of the Swedish company has continued to consolidate this reputation over the years.

One of Volvo’s greatest innovations was the invention of the three-point seat belt in 1958. It really changed the game; Volvo has estimated that this type of seat belt has saved more than a million lives in more than four decades.

Ironically, however, Volvo announced its biggest recall of all time for what earned its reputation: seat belts. According to a report by Reuters, the automaker has announced that it is recalling approximately 2.2 million vehicles worldwide to resolve a problem with the steel cable that connects the front seat belts to the car.

The problem is not so serious, however. According to Volvo in Reuters“The cable may, under certain rare circumstances and user behaviors, experience fatigue over time. This could eventually damage the cable, resulting in a reduction of the seatbelt restraint.”

No accident or injury has been reported in connection with this recall despite the significant number of cars affected worldwide.

The vehicles concerned, according to the report of Automotive news, include Volvo S60, S60L, S60CC, V60, V60CC, XC60, V70, XC70, S80 and S80L. These affected models were built from 2006 to 2019.

Automotive news also reported that 412,000 units have been affected in Volvo’s home country in Sweden, while about 308,000 vehicles are included in the list from the United States.

No NHTSA campaign number has been released to date, but Volvo said it would notify owners by mail with instructions on how to resolve the issue with their local Volvo dealer. Affected car owners can also try to call 800-458-1552.
