Tuner Turns Suzuki Jimny Into Mini First-Gen Land Rover Defender
Squint and the Suzuki Jimny might look like several other boxy makes and models. Jeep Wrangler? May be. A vintage Ford Bronco? Yep. A Class G baby? Well, duh. The list of lookalikes keeps growing and the latest addition is a first generation Land Rover Defender. And all thanks to Damd in Japan, once again.
The company has a complete kit that turns the Suzuki into a Land Rover Defender knockoff, albeit vintage. The kit includes the grille, front and rear bumpers, a new hood, mud flaps, five 16-inch Dean Cross Country or APIO Wildboar SR wheels, wheel arches and badges. The badges and lettering are made to appear authentic, although they say and spell Little D, instead, which is available in silver and black. The company also offers wheel trims that match the color of the vehicle.
Damd also offers the kit on its own, removing the wheels from the packaging. Each part listed above is available individually including lettering and Little D badge or license plate shift bracket. There’s an upgrade for the interior – the seat covers, which are available in checkered gray or beige houndstooth to add a touch of nostalgia to the vintage look.
Upgrades only change Jimny’s appearance. The original 1.5-liter engine of the clogged SUV remains the powertrain. It produces 100 horsepower (75 kilowatts) and 96 pound-feet (130 Newton-meters) of torque. It pairs with a four-speed automatic transmission or a five-speed manual transmission. Power is channeled to all four wheels with Suzuki’s Allgrip Pro AWD system. The part-time 4WD system comes with a low range transfer gear and three drive modes.
Don’t let the small size and mediocre performance fool you into thinking the Suzuki is all about looks. When the automaker redesigned it, it revised the rear suspension design, allowing for an approach angle of 37 degrees and a departure angle of 49 degrees. With numbers like these, this Defender Skin Kit looks just right. And adorable.
