This Mental Monster Miata With V8 Power Conquers All At Drag Strip

Shortly after Mazda launched the MX-5 Miata, people began to replace the stock four-cylinder with American V8 engines. One company even came up with a pretty handy conversion that was marketed as the Monster Miata, but the Miata in this clip from 1320video is truly a monster of epic proportions.

According to the video, the owner of this wild Miata is Tony Thompson and he loves to tear this thing up on the drag track. The car is well suited for such action, starting with a Ford V8 engine built in the front. We are not given details of the plant; Boss 302 decals on the fenders suggest it’s a proven 5.0-liter, but we’re told it’s a race engine, so the displacement is probably a bit more than that. It’s hooked up to an old-fashioned manual transmission as well, so Thompson changes that stuff like crazy going down the track. How cool is that?

And he makes a lot of displacement. In addition to the big engine, this Miata now has a solid 9-inch rear axle with scale bars and massive tires. It’s the preferred setup for throwing hard and going straight, and this Miata can hit 145mph at the end of the quarter mile. We see him making 10 second passes throughout this clip, and he says he went as fast as 9.71 seconds. Watching this car launch like a cocaine mad sasquatch, we have no problem believing it.

Miata purists might frown at the destruction of her weight balance and manipulative prowess, but sacred cow Does this guy have all kinds of fun. Racing at the Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, Indiana, he sends out all the competitors in his class, including an older SN95 Mustang Cobra Jet which was built by Ford specifically for drag racing. And maybe the best part? Mad Miata is street legal, so after beating all the challengers, he came home with a smile.
