The small SUV market is growing. By that we mean really small – below subcompact to be precise. Jeep occupies a special place in the hierarchy, since its history in the segment dates back to decades, long before the term Sports vehicle has never been used. A new Jeep will likely arrive in 2022 that will fill these ultra-small shoes, and here is our exclusive vision of how it looks.
You might be surprised to see very little resemblance to Jeep’s current small offering, the Renegade. This model will slip under the Renegade, but we don’t think it will share a similar design structure. Indeed, things have changed within the parent company of Jeep FCA in recent months, in particular with regard to the FCA-PSA merger. Jeep now has access to small platforms like Peugeot and Opel, not to mention Fiat.
This is important because it is quite possible that the new Jeep is only offered on the European and Asian markets. Giving it a closer face to larger Jeep models like the Cherokee could help differentiate the SUV in a segment often called cute. In this case, the inspiration for the design also comes from the Jeep Yuntu concept vehicle which was revealed at Auto Shanghai in 2017.
This is as well significant, as rumors suggest that the new compact sub-sub Jeep may offer some form of electrification. The plug-in hybrid powertrains could be in the mix, as well as full EV variants. The Yuntu was presented as a plug-in hybrid model, so there is certainly some symmetry in the redesign of the SUV – which was designed as a large three-row vehicle – in a small, highly efficient offering.
Rumor has it that this new Jeep will arrive sometime in 2022. Would buyers intensify our design, or would something closer to the Renegade be more desirable? Share your opinion with us below.
