The Limited-to-50 Rolls-Royce Wraith Kryptos Carries Secret Messaging

What would happen if Sherlock Holmes and professor of criminal engineering James Moriarity put their differences aside to create a car? The two famous characters in Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective novels operate on both sides of the law, but share a passion for puzzles, so it would make sense that they would design something like the 2021 Rolls-Royce Wraith Kryptos. Make no mistake, the Kryptos (thanks to its secret messaging) is as much an enigma as a means of transport.

Passion for puzzles

The British luxury automaker says the concept for this Rolls-Royce Wraith Kryptos 2021 collection was born out of the passion of Rolls-Royce custom designer Katrin Lehmann for cryptography. The Wraith Kryptos collection hides secret messages hidden in a series of glyphs found inside and outside the car. The Wraith Kryptos is the latest addition to the brand’s line of classic cars, which are produced in thematic batches by a selected design team.

About the project, Lehmann said: “As a designer, I have always been fascinated by the idea that you can communicate messages that are only understood by an elite, using symbols, pictograms and numbers Finding the key is an integral part of appreciating the full meaning of something that might otherwise be viewed as just a work of art. “For once, it doesn’t just take money to be elite , it also takes the brain.

Rather than spreading the secret messages of the Rolls-Royce Wraith Kryptos Collection 2021 to its customers, Rolls-Royce gamified the experience of owning a car by placing cyphers throughout the vehicle. Rolls-Royce says “the code is so secret that only two people at the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood know the full resolution of the sequence – the designer and the general manager.” Like a detective story, the secret messaging solution is hidden in a sealed envelope in the CEO’s safe.

Custom design

The Spirit of ecstasy adorns the hood, but not without some additional customizations to the emblematic ornament. The figure motif is introduced here at the base of the figurine, engraved with green enamel details. Delphic gray paint coats the exterior, a unique color that combines a base coat of anthracite (sic) with blue and green mica flakes that are only visible in the sun. Rolls-Royce painted the body line – the horizontal decorative strip that runs the length of the body – “Kryptos Green”, which is supported by a shaded line of dark gray paint.

Rolls-Royce says the design invokes a “data flow”, with instances of the pattern appearing on the dashboard, the headlining and a “cryptic pattern” on the head restraints in place of the “double R” logo “usual – perhaps this is a hint that can be used to decode the figure. The doors of the Rolls-Royce Wraith Kryptos 2021 collection also have lighting accents that reinforce the mysterious atmosphere. The custom design team introduced the green color Kryptos into the cabin with the installation of a leather headliner in the same color.

As elusive as a real spectator

Under the hood of the Rolls-Royce Wraith Kryptos Collection 2021 is the same 6.6-liter twin-turbo V-12 engine producing 642 horsepower and 605 lb-ft of torque that powers the regular Rolls-Royce Wraith. The engine is mated to an eight-speed transmission that sends power to the rear wheels. While these are still impressive numbers, this car is much more about owning an incredibly limited vehicle with the embellishment of a designer’s vision.

We don’t imagine that the overlap between big budget buyers and encryption enthusiasts includes a large part of the population, but Rolls-Royce seems to think the answer lies in the neighborhood of 50 people – that’s how many examples from the 2021 Rolls-Royce Wraith Kryptos collection the company will produce. There is no word on pricing yet, but expect the starting MSRP to exceed $ 400,000.

Rolls-Royce customers can express their interest in the car to their dealer this week, with deliveries scheduled to begin in late 2020. If you buy a Rolls-Royce Wraith Kryptos Collection 2021 or manage to fully decrypt encryption or even partial messaging at from the video and photos embedded in our gallery, let us know so that we can update this story and share the secret message with the world.
