Rebirth of an Off-Road Icon
General Motors has released the 2022 GMC Hummer EV, a full-size electric pickup with insane horsepower, removable roof, moonscape-themed details, and a price tag of $ 112,005 for the premium Edition 1 trim. which is expected to continue selling before the end of 2021.
We know that’s a lot to unwrap.
Let’s start with this: it’s real. Of course, the Hummer EV Edition 1 in these photos is more of a show car, but it still shows the next production pickups slated to roll off the line at GM’s retooled Detroit-Hamtramck plant.
Although it pulled the cord on the Hummer brand around ten years ago, GM is revitalizing the name as a model under its GMC brand. It appears the company is hoping to cash in on the Hummer brand’s cachet while trying to exorcise it of the negative environmental reputation of older gasoline and diesel-consuming models.
While GMC will offer the Hummer EV in a number of different trims, the brand will initially sell the vehicle only as Edition 1. As such, all Hummer 2022 EVs are painted white with a painted stem. in black. As the top-performing variant of the Hummer EV, the Edition 1 comes standard with three electric motors, two of which power the rear axle (the third provides a growl up front). As such, the truck comes standard with four-wheel drive and a torque-vectoring rear end – a configuration GMC calls e-4WD.
The brand claims that the truck’s powertrain generates more than 1,000 horsepower. All that growl means this big electric vehicle is capable of sprinting to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds, according to the company.
GMC Hummer EV 2022: the price of the excess
The Hummer EV Edition 1 will continue into model year 2023, when it will be joined by the 3X version, which is expected to go on sale before the end of 2022. Like the six-digit Edition 1, the Hummer EV3X has three motors and a torque vector, however, it starts at a more reasonable (well, relatively speaking) price of $ 99,995. In 2023, GMC plans to add the two-engine 2X trim to the lineup, which starts at $ 89,995. The base Hummer EV2 goes on sale in 2024 with a starting price of $ 79,995. All of the following variations will offer a full rainbow of colors available, however, all Hummer EV trims sport black paint above the belt line as part of the model’s signature look.
As you would expect, the Hummer EV Edition 1 is very well equipped and includes an off-road oriented kit such as 18-inch wheels wrapped in 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler tires (the truck, however, can accommodate rubber from 37 inches), rock rails, adaptive air suspension, four-wheel steering and a special badge on the dashboard and splash screen.
The word “Hummer” is inscribed on the front of the vehicle in a clear lens and there are two exterior lights on top. The lamps provide both additional lighting and show the vehicle’s state of charge, according to Hummer EV chief engineer Al Oppenheiser, a man who has spent most of his career at GM developing the Chevrolet Camaro. . Oppenheiser has been asked to inject some of the Camaro’s spice into the Hummer EV, a vehicle that will serve as a halo for GM’s electric truck program.
“Mr. Camaro” as he is called, also serves as a canary in the coal mine. “I have gasoline in my veins,” he says. He knows that if GM could convince him that electric vehicles can be exhilarating, then the company’s battery-electric models should win over any skeptics.
2022 GMC Hummer EV: charge and range
The Hummer EV has a projected range of over 350 miles on a full charge, per GM. It works with either 400-volt or 800-volt DC fast chargers and is said to be able to add 100 miles of range in 10 minutes. The exact charge time from exhaustion isn’t known, in part because GM has yet to build vehicles for real-world testing.
Strapping the batteries to GM’s existing truck platform would have limited the potential of the Hummer EV, Oppenheiser said, as GM needed an architecture that would allow its team to install batteries with sufficient capacity to meet the targeted autonomy of the company while ensuring that the pack was correctly. protected from potential damage during off-road excursions. With its adaptive air suspension, the Hummer EV offers a pull-out mode that raises the suspension height approximately six inches, allowing the truck to clear obstacles such as rocks or a ford up to two and a half feet. of water. Don’t get too excited, though, as Extract Mode won’t be available until sometime after launch. In addition, the Hummer EV will offer the latest version of GM’s Super Cruise driver assistance system.
2022 GMC Hummer EV: off-road performance
With approximately 13 inches of front and rear suspension travel and approach and departure angles of 44 and 34 degrees, respectively, in its Terrain mode (Extraction mode increases the approach angle to 50 degrees), the 2022 GMC Hummer EV promises to live up to the off-tarmac performance expectations associated with the Hummer nameplate.
Much like the Chevrolet Bolt, the Hummer EV offers one-pedal driving. In addition, the person in the driver’s seat of the Hummer EV can use the truck’s steering wheel paddle to increase the force of its regenerative braking system – a boon for those looking to slowly advance the GMC electric truck over difficult trails.
Four of the Hummer EV’s 18 cameras are placed below and essentially act as virtual observers. In addition, the live feed from the dash mounted screen also shows the position of the truck’s wheels. A “wash” feature ensures the cameras stay free of dirt and mud, while each is wrapped in a way that prevents damage from difficult terrain.
And yes, Oppenheiser assured us the Hummer could take to the air and land skillfully. The first prototype to come off the line is heading north for winter testing, but according to Oppenheiser the next two Hummer EV prototypes are about to hit the trails and deserts.
Other off-road-friendly items include a four-wheel steering feature, which allows the rear wheels to turn up to 10 degrees. The rear wheels can even steer at the same angle as the fronts at low speeds, allowing for a “CrabWalk” feature that GMC says will help Hummer EV riders navigate off-road obstacles.
2022 GMC Hummer EV: WTF Riding Modes
Along with the aforementioned Terrian and Extract driving modes, the Hummer EV also offers more typical Tour, Off-Road and Tow-Haul settings. There is also an Adrenaline sub-mode, also known as Launch Control, which includes a Watts to Freedom (WTF) theatrical experience. It prepares the driver and passengers for the epic acceleration of the Hummer EV as the truck’s air suspension lowers its body and the electronics condition the powertrain and battery for peak performance.
Like the build-up before set off on a roller coaster, the Hummer EV’s WTF feature includes kitschy details such as special graphics on the gauge cluster and infotainment screen, sound effects from the speakers and seats. which vibrate in anticipation of the truck’s launch. Once the signal is given that the truck is cocked and ready, the driver loads the accelerator pedal, unloads the brake pedal, and … be set on fire! A graphic of the truck from behind is displayed on the central infotainment screen to complete the experience.
2022 GMC Hummer EV: The Interior Story
Inside, the Hummer EV features a large 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and an even larger 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment display mounted on the dashboard. The latter system offers three customizable information partitions, while its navigation app includes tools to help drivers get to and from the trails and locate charging stations along the way.
Leatherette covers the seats and steering wheel – a move made to promote durability and avoid the use of animal hides. Additionally, a number of space-themed Easter eggs dot the cabin of the Hummer EV Edition 1 and include floors that are grained like the surface of the moon, the sea of tranquility of the moon etched. in the speaker grilles, and more. Each of these is a nod to the fact that the Hummer EV was considered a “moonshot” given the vehicle’s short development time – half the time of a typical GM product.
GMC Hummer EV 2022: raising the roof
One of the most interesting features of the Hummer EV is its Infinity Roof, which consists of four removable transparent roof panels, as well as associated bars that connect the panels together. With the panels and bars removed, the Hummer EV delivers a convertible-like outdoor experience. The truck’s power rear window that falls into the body to bring even more fresh air into the Hummer EV’s cabin adds even more to the ambience.
Each roof panel weighs about 25 pounds and all four can be stowed in the trunk, or front trunk, in a set of standard vinyl storage bags. While Edition 1 also comes standard with an electric rear tonneau cover, lower Hummer EV models will feature a cheaper vinyl unit. As expected for a GMC truck, the Hummer EV includes the brand’s innovative MultiPro tailgate.
Unfortunately, GMC has yet to release payload or towing figures for the Hummer EV. That said, we expect the brand to share this information in the coming months, perhaps before removing the wraps from the upcoming Hummer EV SUV.
