From concept to production, we often see a lot of toned down, regardless of the vehicle. Very few cars have actually retained the overall look and feel of their dream designs, and even fewer have improved the overall concept, creating something even better than the initial good footing. It looks like the recently unveiled 2021 Ram 1500 TRX is one of those rare cases. While the concept garnered positive feedback just four years ago, it still took a lot of work to get the Ram 1500 TRX where the manufacturer wanted it to be.
MotorTrend had the opportunity to speak to Mike Gillam, the head of the exterior design team behind the Ram TRX, to get a better idea of what has really changed since the initial effort. The good part is that Gillam is the same guy who designed, developed and built the concept four years ago, so he’s the perfect guy to ask. “The differences between the concept truck and the production truck is that this is one of the few cases where the movie ends up being better than the book. The concept truck was obviously rated at 575 hp. The production truck has it. 702. “

He notes that the most familiar visual cues between the two are definitely the headlights. The concept used the grille of a heavy-duty Power Wagon, but they decided to play across the full width of the 88-inch-wide truck using a different graphic. It creates a visual, nasty front end that sets it apart from other Ram trucks. The use of the ID lights has also been improved, with only three of them to be used due to the width of the vehicle, and are integrated into the functional hood scoop. “Then we integrated the clearance lights, those corner markers down into the flares. You will see at the front there are amber ones at the front which are at the bottom, located on the dropouts of the bumper. And then at the back they are located in the flares. “
He also talks about the side exhaust in the concept, which was a nice touch but lacked functionality and hampered some of the clearance as they had to route it under the frame rail. A fragile exhaust pipe has no reason to be in a place that can be easily damaged. In the end, a straight tailpipe exhaust did the trick, with two tailpipes and five-inch matte black painted double-walled tailpipes.
Cool stuff, and you can read all about the other stuff on Ram’s super truck in the interview here. We think what Ram has right now is amazing and absolutely blows the concept out of the water. Now we can’t wait to face him against his rival Blue Oval.
