Nissan Still Hasn’t Decided Which Direction The GT-R R36 Will Take
Nissan has recently returned to the limelight with its redesign of the Z. While all of this is all well and good, details on the next-gen GT-R remain rumored. Either way, the Japanese automaker is committed to keeping the same wow factor associated with its high-tech supercar.
“The goal of the next GT-R is to be a very credible performance machine again, as the current GT-R is even after a few years on the market,” said Ivan Espinosa, senior vice president of planning overall product portfolio at Nissan. “It’s still a very believable car, super fast and great to drive and we’ll stick with that.
Rumors suggest that the next Godzilla – estimated to be released in 2023 – will feature an electric gasoline transmission with a kinetic energy recovery system inspired by the automaker’s previous endurance racing contenders. Fortunately, this vehicle has a better chance of materializing than the fateful GT-R LM Nismo race car and its 2015 24 Hours of Le Mans performance – only one car finished and they were behind schedule.
While the drive for Circuit de la Sarthe’s overall glory was to be forgotten, the company found great success in motorsport by building engines with Gibson. We can’t say how much that plume will rub off on the R36, but it will likely have a spicier version of the existing 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V6 producing an alleged output of 710 horsepower (530 kilowatts) and 575 pound-feet. (780 newton-meters) of torque.
“The GT-R, along with the Z and the Patrol, are perhaps the three most iconic and representative nameplates of the brand that we have as a company, which have a deep history within the company” , Espinosa said.
Semantics aside, it’s clear that Nissan wants to bide its time to bring the latest GT-R to the production line. The added weight of the hybrid systems seemed to hit a deal with Espinosa, but the numbers don’t lie, so let’s wait and see.
