Next Subaru WRX And STI Getting High-Output 2.4-Liter Turbo: Report
According to the Japanese site, the next-gen Subaru WRX and WRX STI would both use versions of the brand’s 2.4-liter turbocharged flat-four engine. Car sensor. Three turbocharged engines will drive 80% of the automaker’s lineup by 2021.
The FA24 2.4-liter turbo flat-four is already familiar from models like the Ascent, Legacy and Outback. The new WRX and WRX STI would use a high output version of this mill.

There would be three reasons to switch to the FA24 for the next generation WRX and STI. First, it is more efficient than the previous engines. In addition, Subie is less concerned with international motorsports where the rules generally favor a displacement of 2.0 liters. Finally, people outside of Japan are used to a WRX STI with a 2.5 liter engine, and these customers are used to the handling of a larger displacement engine.
A six-speed manual would remain available to them. According to Car sensor, the existing CVT can only handle up to 295 lb-ft (400 Nm). It is not known how Subie intends to deal with this problem.
A rumor suggests that Toyota is offering a contribution to the new WRX and STI, including using advanced all-wheel drive technology. This system might have something in common with the Yaris WRC system.
Additionally, a new turbocharged 1.5-liter flat-four will replace the models with the current naturally aspirated boxer engine, so it will likely be in future versions of the Impreza and Crosstrek.
