New Nissan GT-R Due 2023 With Hybrid Power: Report
The Nissan GT-R is probably one of the oldest platforms used for a nameplate in automotive history. The first production version of the current GT-R was introduced at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show and reached the US market several months later.
Although it has undergone several updates during its current life, including Italdesign’s latest GT-R50, the R35 GT-R is essentially the same under its skin and long overdue for a major overhaul.
But it won’t be long before we see Nissan’s next-gen flagship sports car – at least according to Automotive News‘ Future product pipeline series starring Nissan. Ashwani Gupta, COO of Nissan Motor Co., said Automotive News that the company is in the process of massively revamping its range in the United States. And yes, that includes the GT-R.
According to the report, Nissan is already working on the GT-R redesign, which could be released in 2023. It’s only been two years – a fairly short time since the GT-R years. Moreover, Automotive News says Japanese society is considering a performance-driven hybrid powertrain for the GT-R, but it will be a kinetic energy recovery system. If this sounds familiar, Nissan’s Le Mans racing car, the GT-R LM Nismo, uses the same technology.
Both of the above claims contradict previous reports from last year. A previous story said that the next R36 would not become a hybrid, while another postulated that the current GT-R would last until 2027.
But then again, that was last year and there are many internal factors that could have influenced decisions within the company – not to mention Ghosn and happened. Now Nissan is back on its feet for a full recovery and we’re happy to hear that its halo car is not on the back burner – at least if we are to believe this report which can only be confirmed by an official. release by society.
