New Mercedes S-Class Airbags Protect Rear Passengers In Front Crashes

Discover the S-Class DIGITAL # 2: Innovation through intelligence: the new S-Class features revolutionary innovations in safety, comfort and driving functions

The second edition of the “Meet the S-Class DIGITAL” special offer provides information on the technical innovations of the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class ahead of its world premiere in September. The luxury sedan’s revolutionary technology sets new standards in safety and comfort and makes driving easier with smart features. Michael Hafner, VP of Automated Driving, provides moderator Yasmine Blair with information on highlights such as the world’s first airbag for rear passengers and the combination of the PRE-SAFE® Impulse Side system with ACTIVE BODY active suspension CONTROL. This means that active and passive safety systems are even more closely integrated with each other. The information format “Meet the S-Class DIGITAL # 2: Innovation by intelligence” will be broadcast in a media special on Wednesday July 29, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. (CEST) on the Mercedes me media digital platform at https: // media.mercedes-, after which it will be available on video on demand.

Stuttgart. Whether it’s the airbag or the ESP® electronic stability program, each generation in the history of the S-Class model has set new benchmarks in safety in their respective eras. Innovative technologies have often become the new normal, not only at Mercedes-Benz but throughout the automotive industry. Once again, the new S-Class, which will have its world premiere on September 2, takes driving safety and comfort to a whole new level. It is the first car in the world to be fitted with airbags for the rear passengers to protect them in the event of a frontal impact. It calls for a concept totally different from that of the front airbags. During deployment, for example, the airbags must be able to adapt to the child seats. Combined with a Belt Bag, an inflatable seat belt, the S-Class thus sets new benchmarks in terms of safety for rear passengers.

Mercedes-Benz develops all safety functions on the basis of the knowledge acquired through its own accident research, which the company has been carrying out for more than 50 years. The “Real Life Safety” philosophy often goes beyond legal safety requirements – thereby producing innovations that significantly increase the safety of occupants and other road users. An example on the way to a fully integrated safety concept, in which active and passive safety systems merge, is the extension of the PRE-SAFE® Impulse Side function in the new S-Class. The function uses radar sensors to identify an impending side impact. For the first time, it protects occupants not only by using air cushions in the seats to move the driver or front passenger towards the center of the vehicle, but also by simultaneously lifting the entire vehicle using the E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL suspension to deflect impact through more rigid structures. PRE-SAFE® Impulse Side thus extends the capabilities of the active suspension, which elevates the ride and handling of the new S-Class to a whole new level.
