MkVIII Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport Offers Almost 300 HP
Another day another Volkswagen Golf variant has no plans to ship to the United States. It is true that Volkswagen will honor us with the eighth generation Golf GTI, but the brand will not send us the even hotter GTI Clubsport.. (The regular Golf and Golf wagon will also not make the trip to the United States).
Like the GTI on which it’s based, the Clubsport relies on a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine for motivation. However, it now produces over 50 additional horsepower. With just under 300 horsepower and a standard seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, the front-wheel-drive Clubsport promises to reduce the grease from the GTI’s lower throttle times even further. (We haven’t tested the 2022 Golf GTI yet, but a 220 horsepower 2018 GTI with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission hit 100 km / h in 6.0 seconds.
A new ‘Nürburgring’ drive mode, designed to make the most of the hot hatch performance capabilities on the nearly 13 mile German track, and, presumably, other tracks, also contributes to the performance of the Clubsport . In addition, the car’s electronic limited-slip differential is integrated into the vehicle dynamics system.
A number of model-specific styling details denote the more dynamic nature of the Clubsport, including a more aggressive lower fairing, split rear spoiler, sleeker rear diffuser with oval tailpipes, wider rocker panels, an attractive set of 18 inch wheels and a 0.4 inch reduction in ride height. In other words, the Clubsport looks like a subtly sportier GTI.
Not that it matters to us Yanks anyway. For now, we’ll just have to look at this piece of forbidden fruit from a distance. Hopefully a few kilometers behind the wheel of the Golf GTI 2022 and the future Golf R will help us forget the existence of the Golf GTI Clubsport.
