Mercedes-AMG Offers Roof Top Carrier Complete With Fins And Diffusers

Let’s role-play with a first world problem. You recently spent $ 70,000 on a suave new Mercedes-AMG C63 coupe, despite pressure from your in-laws to get a BMW X3 M for the same price. Now your team wants you to spearhead a weekend at a stylish seaside resort, and your Merc doesn’t have enough room for gear. You could never fitting a spare roof box is what Audi owners do. Don’t worry, AMG is coming to your rescue.

This rescue comes in the form of a fitted roof rack designed by the same people who created your car. It’s called the Mercedes-AMG roof box, and what it lacks in an inspiring name it makes up for in style. Of course, other cargo boxes have aerodynamic features such as diffusers, but none have AMG badges. Moreover, this one was created specifically for all Mercedes vehicles.

In fact, Mercedes-AMG offers two different versions of its roof box, including one designed only for coupe models like your C63. The changes are relegated to the transporter diffuser which is better optimized for the coupe’s curved roofline. This allows for better air circulation around the box with reduced wind noise, while carrying up to 154 pounds (70 kilograms) of cargo. However, your C63 might not be able to handle as much as the automaker advises people to observe specific roof weight restrictions for various vehicles.

Regardless of the weight, the AMG roof box creates an additional 14.5 cubic feet (410 liters) of storage space. It can certainly be useful for smaller Mercedes models, but it also doesn’t seem out of place on larger AMG wagons or SUVs. It mounts with an easy-to-use quick-release clamping system, but there is one noticeable issue when it comes to vehicle performance. Despite its aerodynamic shape and AMG badge, Mercedes says the box is only approved for speeds up to 81 mph. On some models, you can exceed this threshold in as little as five seconds.

Mercedes-AMG is currently not offering pricing for its new roof box, but it will be available directly from Mercedes and from Mercedes partners from November.
