For many years, the Mercedes G-Class was synonymous with off-road prowess, but AMG and aftermarket specialists then got their hands on the famed SUV for more on-road performance. We’ve seen our fair share of blazingly fast G-Wagens, but this one takes the proverbial cake. How does AMG GT R acceleration sound in a vehicle that weighs over 2.5 tonnes? That’s right: the Posaidon G63 can go from 0 to 100 km / h in just 3.6 seconds.
With its twin-turbo V8, the stock G63 certainly doesn’t lack in the power department, as it develops 585 horsepower and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) straight from the factory. Posaidon fiddled with the 4.0-liter engine and managed to crank the power up to 940 horsepower and 1278 Newton-meters (943 pound-feet) of torque.
Squeezing out so much power over the standard V8 wasn’t easy, but the tuner replaced the stock turbochargers with a custom pair and also installed a new exhaust system. Posaidon has spent time tweaking the cylinder heads, intake and cooling, but the G63’s sheath trump card is in the cargo area. This is where the extra tank has been fitted to feed the water / methanol injection system for extra boost pressure to achieve those spectacular horsepower and torque figures.
It goes without saying that the tuner also had to play around with the ECU by optimizing the software in order to accommodate the immense increase in power. Speaking of software, the top speed is electronically regulated at 280 km / h, which is very impressive for a vehicle with the drag coefficient of a brick.
With great power comes great responsibility, which is why Posaidon had to install an AMG set of sturdy carbon-ceramic brakes that not only improve braking but also reduce a bit of weight compared to traditional rotors. To complete the changes, the modified hood with carbon fiber inlets provides better engine ventilation and a more aggressive look.
