Mercedes-AMG G63 Drag Races AMG A45 S In The Name Of Fun

The formidable AMG brand has expanded in recent years to include a wide range of powerful vehicles. With more models than ever under the brand’s umbrella, there are disparities, and this is no better illustrated than by two models – the AMG A45 S and the G63. Carwow decided to put the dramatically different Mercedes vehicles through a series of drag races to see which one performs better.

It’s an odd comparison – a five-door hot hatch and a big, boxy super SUV – but it piqued our interest because both models power all four wheels. It is not surprising that there are significant differences in the powertrains. The A45 sports a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that develops 421 horsepower (313 kilowatts) and 368 pound-feet (500 Newton-meters) of torque. The G63 is equipped with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 developing 565 hp (421 kW) and 626 lb-ft (850 Nm). There is also the colossal weight and aerodynamic differences.

The first race sees the G63 take a considerable lead, although the A45 begins to wind it as it approaches the finish line. It is not enough to overtake the G-Wagen but shows that the more powerful G63 cannot stray from the smaller A45. A second race gives the A45 a better start, although the G63 still gains a slight lead. However, the A45 wraps it up again, easily closing the smaller gap and taking the lead, passing the first in 12.1 seconds. The G63 completed the quarter mile in 12.3 seconds.

Two rolling races earn victories for the AMG hot hatch before it finishes the competition by easily winning the brake test. The A45’s smaller size and reduced weight make up for its drawbacks in horsepower and torque. There is also a big price difference between the two. Carwow tested the A45 at £ 56,570 ($ 74,715 at current exchange rates) while the G63 was extensively priced at £ 146,490 ($ 192,829).
