Massive Ford F-450 Dually EV Off-Roader Isn’t What You Expect
Ford is getting everyone ready for the launch of its all-electric F-150 in 2022. However, you can have this massive Ford Super Duty EV right now. It has everything you need in such a truck, including all-wheel drive and high clearance suspension to get off the beaten track. It features custom Contra wheels, aggressive off-road tires, and of course, a hitch rack for towing your toys.
There is just one notable catch. Technically, this F-450 is a toy.
Specifically, it’s a 1:10 scale rc truck from CEN Racing, but we weren’t kidding that it was gigantic. It’s just over 26 inches long and rides on a 17.6-inch wheelbase, and we’re not sure you’ll find anything else in the 1:10 scale segment with dimensions like that. Its steel frame consists of three sections and the body of the Lexan F-450 consists of two sections bolted together.
Underneath there is a single brushed Mabuchi 550 electric motor driving the front and rear wheels. Sealed electronic speed control is standard, as are oil shocks and stabilizer bars to minimize body roll. Power comes from old-school LiPo or NiMH batteries, and depending on the output, the F-450 can reach speeds of up to 16 mph.
In a rc world of brushless motors and high speed action, 16mph seems pretty low, but here’s the problem. This F-450 scale is designed much like its full-size lookalike. The brushed motor and speed control works with a three-speed transmission designed for torque rather than speed. Still, if you want to go faster, the gearing can be changed for speed. And there is also a wonderful world of aftermarket engines.
That said, this platform is set up for the couple. Just like the size, we weren’t kidding about the hitch mount either – this F-450 can pull 1:10 scale trailers loaded with your other radio controlled toys. Is it a thing? Apparently, and to be honest, we’re dying to have an old 1:10 scale Tamiya SVT F-150 Lightning truck on a trailer behind this thing. We would absolutely rule Cars & Coffee with such genius.
Unfortunately, Tamiya’s SVT Lightning has been out of production for a long time, and CEN Racing is currently showing the F-450 as sold out. It costs $ 369 and you get a ready-made pickup right out of the box. The body is pre-painted in blue or gray and fully assembled, and a transmitter is part of the package.
It won’t pull a bunch of tall wagons like the real EV F-150, but this one looks like way More fun.
