Buying a new car is an experience that most of us only have the chance to experience a few times in our lives. I had the opportunity to take delivery of a new car a few times and my enthusiasm went through the roof twice. I can only imagine that the purchase of a Lamborghini must be on another level, but this Huracan owner will probably want to forget the day when the dealer handed over the keys to this Performante Spyder.
Barely 20 minutes after recovering the car, the driver had no other way but to stop because of a “mechanical failure”, according to a message posted on Twitter by West Yorkshire police. The details of what didn’t work with the naturally aspirated V10 supercar are shrouded in mystery, but what happened after the car broke down was even worse.
“An innocent motorist” driving a van could not stop in time and crashed into the rear of the Lamborghini, causing serious damage to the Huracan droptop. The mid-engine beauty of Sant’Agata Bolognese successfully deployed the retractable anti-roll bars, while the right rear wheel came off due to the severity of the impact.
With most of the damage in the engine compartment area, it is likely that the Performante Spyder will be declared struck off. It is not in fact the first Performante to have a tragic end in the United Kingdom when a coupe was hit in a tree last year at the end of an automobile competition. The last incident occurred on the M1 motorway, which had to be temporarily closed to clear the road.
No one was seriously injured in the accident, but the driver of the van sustained minor head injuries. The police tweet gives the impression that it was not their fault, but stopping a car usually means just the opposite. However, the exact details of what actually happened are not available at the time of writing. The driver of the Lamborghini could have stopped suddenly, leaving insufficient time for the driver of the van to react.
