A few weeks ago, a report was released saying that Jaguar Land Rover could announce a plan to restructure its portfolio of models. At the time, we were not worried about the new Jaguar XJ because work on the British sedan was already well advanced, but it turns out that the brand’s flagship product could be in trouble.
A new report from The Sunday Times, brought to our attention by Coach, says the launch of the new XJ will be delayed until at least the third quarter of next year because the automaker is drastically cutting non-essential costs to survive. The reason for this decision is that the XJ is not one of the most profitable models in the business.
“The Jaguar XJ has been our flagship model for 50 years. Our engineers continue to work on the new generation all-electric XJ. We remain committed to our long-term strategy and our product portfolio remains the same, but the unprecedented situation will inevitably have an impact on our immediate plans, “said a Jaguar spokesperson. The Sunday Times.
This delay is also linked to Jaguar’s plans to restart production at its Castle Bromwich factory, where the XE and XF are also assembled. Due to anti-coronavirus measures, the plant will operate with reduced production and this will leave no empty space for the production of the new XJ.
The good news is that the manufacturer promises to stay engaged and eventually launch its flagship sedan. The new XJ will be a purely electric vehicle for the Tesla Model S and the next Mercedes-Benz EQS. We have already spied on prototypes several times, but the development program is likely to be slowed down over the next few months.
