Hongqi E-HS9 EV SUV Front

Hongqi E-HS9 Is China’s New Six-Figure, All-Electric Luxury SUV

The Chinese auto market has exploded with brands in recent years. Hongqi is not one of the new kids in the neighborhood, however. It dates back to 1958 and has a history of luxury and prestige, especially as a brand used by government officials. So when a new Hongqi model is introduced, locals notice it. And there’s no shortage of this large all-electric SUV, which is making its public debut at the 2020 Beijing Motor Show.

It bears the unimaginative name of E-HS9, but it cannot be denied that it has serious presence. The large SUV sports a chiseled front clip reminiscent of both the BMW X7 and Hyundai Palisade, and we also see a touch of Rolls-Royce in that wide grille. The latter could be due to the fact that the designer of the E-HS9 was formerly employed by the British luxury brand, but going down to the profile we see some nuances of the Lincoln Corsair, both in its roofline inclined and in the fender trim that extends into the front doors. .

Size-wise, it would be a lot bigger than the Corsair. In fact, it’s slightly larger than the X7, and although this particular model is a two-row passenger transport engine, it can be configured for seven passengers. Judging by the photos from the living room, it looks like these occupants are returning considerable comfort with leather and digital displays all around.

The E-HS9 comes in two different performance flavors, but both deliver plenty of power. The below-spec version features two electric motors (one for each axle) rated at 215 horsepower (160 kilowatts) each. That’s 430 hp (320 kW) combined, but the top-end model gets a 329 hp (245 kW) engine for the rear axle. This increases the combined power to 544 hp (405 kW) and is enough to give this seven-passenger SUV a 0-100 km / h sprint in the four-second range. Also, it can travel around 300 miles on a charge, although these stats are from the automaker and have not been independently verified.

As you can imagine, the Hongqi E-HS9 is exclusive to the Chinese market and is not cheap. In US dollars, the high-end version will sell for around $ 110,000.
