Here’s Why Volvo Is Limiting All New Cars To 112 MPH
Following an initial announcement in March 2019 last month, Volvo confirmed that all of the automaker’s new vehicles will have a top speed limiter of 112 miles per hour (180 kilometers per hour). Basically, even if you buy the brand’s most powerful and sporty car (we’re looking at you, Polestar), you won’t be able to exceed that speed.
Volvo’s motivation for this decision is its attempt to reduce and eliminate road accidents and serious injuries in Volvo cars over the next few years. But, obviously, even 112 mph (180 km / h) is way over the speed limit in many countries around the world – does that mean the decision doesn’t make sense?
“112 mph is still fast, so is it going to be the end of speed? No, it isn’t,” commented Malin Ekholm, head of the Volvo Cars Safety Center. Coach in a recent interview. “This is a limitation, and there is really no reason to go faster than 112 mph. Everyone is talking about speed, but we wanted to do something to show that we are serious. This will start an in-depth dialogue on the subject. “
Simply put, Volvo wants the world to finally start taking speed seriously and changing the behavior and overall attitude of drivers. There must, however, be a balance between freedom of movement and security.
“How to reconcile freedom of movement and security, what does the roadmap look like and how to include skeptics? The speed limit is the first step in exploring what safe speed is – and how we can help you maintain it, ”added Ekholm. “Twenty years ago it wasn’t necessarily fun to drive fast because it was not comfortable. Now the cars are fantastic and behave the same way at any speed, so how do you translate the old signals that you received that you were going very fast in a modern context? “
So, does that make more sense now? We’re not sure, but we’d love to hear your voice in the comments section below.
