Here’s Why The New Mercedes-AMG E63 S Doesn’t Have More Power

The updated Mercedes-AMG E63 S sedan and wagon made their debut yesterday, adopting the usual range of mid-cycle updates. But behind the modified front and rear fairings, new headlights and a revised steering wheel borrowed from the 4-door AMG GT, the bits that made the last E63 S a dynamic stunner remain unchanged. While Mercedes could easily have crushed additional ponies as part of the 2021 update, there is a very good reason why the sedan and wagon will keep 603 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque at a time when other AMG products stack up on power. And the most important is the existence of the GT63S 4-door, which has the same 4.0-liter V8 twin turbocharged as the E63, but with 630 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque.

“To highlight the driving capabilities, it was not just a case of pure numbers,” said Drummond Jacoy, director of general vehicle development for Mercedes-AMG. We have a range of cars, and on top of the E63 we have the GT63 S, and we don’t want overlap there, so we’ve kept extra power exclusive to the GT63 S. ”

Well, you have it now. But surely there was room for further improvements, perhaps via the critically acclaimed Mercedes-AMG EQ Boost system, right? The AMG GLE 63 has the smooth 48-volt hybrid platform with a lot of effect alongside its 4.0-liter twin turbo – this model contains an E63 corresponding to 603 hp and 627 lb-ft, but is largely free of turbo lag due to boost equalization. It turns out that the lack of system on this generation comes down to packaging problems.

“The E63 has specific characteristics. We want [launch control], we want very, very specific changes, “said Jacoy. “To do this, we use an electromechanical clutch rather than a torque converter.”

EQ Boost is based on a torque converter and an integrated starter-generator (ISG). You can’t have one without the other.

“We have package constraints, so we decided to stick to the original powertrain when it was set up. We just couldn’t bring in the ISG. “

The lack of EQ Boost or even a big boost in power may seem disappointing in a world where more power seems to be the plan every time a vehicle gets an update. But the reality is that with a 3.2 second sprint at 60 and a top speed limited to 186 miles per hour, the E63 is damn good without the extra punch.
