GM Wins Army Contract To Build Colorado-Based Troop Carriers

WASHINGTON DC. – United States Army Procurement – Detroit Arsenal announced today that GM Defense LLC, a subsidiary of General Motors, has been awarded the production contract to build, commission and maintain the new vehicle for the infantry squad (ISV).

Designed to provide rapid ground mobility, the Expeditionary ISV is a light and agile all-terrain carrier designed to transport an infantry squad of nine soldiers moving across the battlefield. The ISV is light enough to be loaded with a sling from a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter and compact enough to fit inside a CH-47 Chinook helicopter for air transportability. The total value of the ISV production contract award is $ 214.3 million for the acquisition of the initial army supply target of 649. The approved army acquisition target is 2,065 vehicles.

GM Defense’s solution to the transportation needs of the next generation of the Army is based on the award-winning architecture of 2020 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 mid-size trucks and uses 90% off-the-shelf commercial parts. These parts include multimatic double-drawer shock absorbers and Chevrolet Performance suspension components. The durability and performance of these components have been proven in the grueling Best in the Desert series, where Colorado is one of only four vehicles to have completed 11 consecutive races (out of a total of 434 competitors).

As a result, GM Defense can provide an ISV with world-class manufacturing efficiencies, ease of maintenance, and a well-established global supply chain. All ISV models will be fitted with an occupant and cargo superstructure powered by a 186 horsepower Duramax turbo-diesel engine and a six-speed automatic transmission.

“Winning this Army award is well-deserved recognition for the hard work and dedication of our GM Defense team and their production of a fantastic vehicle. We are confident that the ISV GMD will meet and exceed all of our customers’ requirements, “said David Albritton, President of GM Defense. “It is indeed an honor to take advantage of the experience of our parent company as one of the largest car manufacturers in the world to design, build and supply the best technologies available to men and women in the armed forces and our allies. “

In 2019 GM Defense partnered with Ricardo Defense after the U.S. military awarded three million dollar contracts to competing industry suppliers to develop ISV prototypes for testing, evaluation and downward selection for the production contract. Ricardo Defense will take care of the main logistics and commissioning requirements for ISV GM Defense products.

“The entire Ricardo team is proud to continue our work with GM Defense on the ISV contract and to put our infantry troops at risk with this highly capable and essential vehicle,” said Chet Gryczan, President of Ricardo Defense. “The award of the ISV program demonstrates Ricardo’s success in developing and providing integrated product logistics and life cycle maintenance plans for the main priorities of our customers. ISV will demonstrate how quickly the military can quickly produce, commission and service new equipment by leveraging a proven commercially available vehicle and General Motors’ global supply chain infrastructure , supported by Ricardo.

GM Defense is driving the future of military mobility by leveraging General Motors’ best capabilities for unrivaled innovation, proven performance and revolutionary life cycle economy.
