Ford Explorer FX4 Spied Showing Off Rugged Appearance
The Ford Explorer FX4 will be a slightly more rugged version of the crossover. These spy photos are our first look.
Up front, the FX4 has a revised nose. The grille is different from other Explorer models by featuring a range of horizontal slats with openings between them. Unfortunately, the camouflage doesn’t give a good overview of the other design changes. Adjustments to the front fairing seem likely, however.
This FX4 runs on black wheels with five pairs of double spokes. The design resembles the standard Explorer parts except for the color. The textured black fender flares seem to protrude more than on the existing vehicle.
At the rear, there is a revised bumper that appears to end a little higher than on the current Explorer. Our spies believe it’s an effort to give the FX4 a better tee angle for better off-road performance.
The FX4 version of the Expedition could offer clues as to the hardware modifications Ford intends to make to this more robust Explorer. It receives parts such as 32-inch off-road tires, off-road shocks, seven skid plates under the vehicle, chrome running boards and an electronic limited-slip differential. For better visibility, a 360-degree camera system is also standard.
Look for the FX4 available on the Explorer during the 2021 model year. Although the exact timing remains a mystery.
A price information leak suggests the Explorer 2021 is getting a price cut. The base model is $ 540 cheaper, while the top-of-the-line Platinum AWD model is $ 3,770 less. There is also a new sport appearance package for the XLT class and modifications for the sporty ST version.
