Did Corvette Racing Preview The 2021 C8 Stingray R Special Edition?

At the end of March 2020, we learned of the plans for the 2021 Chevrolet Corvette thanks to information from the dealership that was allegedly leaked in advance. Naturally, Chevy’s representatives couldn’t confirm the information, and while nothing seemed overtly bizarre, we had no way of verifying its authenticity. Now we have some evidence to support a Special Edition Stingray R thanks to photos recently posted on Twitter by Corvette Racing.

This is the official Twitter account for the Chevrolet Corvette racing team. The focus with this August 2 tweet was on race cars at Road Atlanta, but a third vehicle was also featured. The white Corvette is a speed car, but could it be little more than that? Looking closely, we see Stingray R on the car’s front splitter. Could the Speed Car get a glimpse of the look of the aforementioned Stingray R special edition model?

According to previously leaked information, the Stingray R is mentioned as being a graphics package with special bezels. The pace car seen here sports a very cool race-themed top stripe that incorporates a black / carbon Corvette emblem on the hood, with Corvette Race written in small red type.

The black / carbon stripe also sports a Chevy bow tie on the roof, and there’s certainly no way to miss the large Stingray windshield banner. The red mirror caps are also impossible to miss, but we can’t see the wheels clear enough to determine what kind of special treatment might take place there.

If this gives a preview of the Stingray R, will it be anything other than an appearance package? At this point, there is no indication that the special treatment will extend beyond the aesthetic, either on these photos or on the previously disclosed information. The package is expected to be offered for the 2021 model year, but it is unknown at the time of an official announcement. The bad news for enthusiastic Corvette buyers is that while the package is offered at the start of production in 2021 later this year, a 12-18 month backlog means you wait at least a year before taking delivery. .
