BMW 2 Series Coupe Spied Hiding Its Updated Design

Spy photos of the BMW 2 Series Coupé update appeared last week, but since then our photographers have taken it twice for testing. The last batch appears to show two versions of the 2 series coupe. While the two-door BMW is still covered in a lot of camouflage and coatings, it is difficult to hide the tailpipes.

The new generation 2 Series coupe is expected to have two powertrains available: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder in-line. The smallest mill is expected to produce 255 horsepower (190 kilowatts) while the inline six cylinder in the M2 could produce more than 420 horsepower (313 kW). The 3.0-liter engine is said to be a detuned version of the X3 M and M4 engine. The 2 Series will build on the BMW CLAR architecture that underpins the larger 3 Series, retaining the two smaller doors with a rear-wheel drive layout.

The new foundations seem to help the proportions of the car, which seem a little better than the current vehicle. At the front, the coating obscures the finest details, but BMW cannot hide the narrower grille and the curved headlights that surround it. BMW said that the larger grille in the 4 series would not fit in on other models. There is also a large opening in the lower grid which occupies the space where the larger grid would live.

Series 2 in the photos shows recessed door handles that are similar to what we saw on the i4. One test vehicle we saw has a single round tailpipe at the rear, while the other has a dual exhaust with trapezoidal outlets. We can also spot a small spoiler and tail lights, although it is unclear whether these lighting elements are production parts.

Two Toyota Supra models are visible in the background from a handful of photos, which could indicate where BMW hopes the updated model could compete. However, we still have a little time before the German automaker organizes a revelation. We don’t expect the next generation 2 Series coupe to arrive before 2021 as a 2022 model. This makes the hottest M2 likely to occur in 2023.
