2023 GMC Hummer EV SUV: Everything We Know About It
Hummer is back, albeit as a sub-brand of GMC, not a standalone brand within General Motors. Don’t call it a gas-guzzler either, as the 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup truck will soon welcome a companion SUV. Like the truck, the SUV trades in the internal combustion engine of earlier Hummers for a battery-powered electric powertrain.
With production kit for GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck plant, the GMC Hummer EV SUV, will likely not arrive until 2022 as a 2023 model. Although GM is not saying much about the technical details of the SUV, the company has announced that the Hummer EV truck will have 1,000 horsepower and will travel 60 miles per hour in 3.0 seconds. Figure the same will apply to the SUV.
Expect the SUV to deliver the off-road capability long associated with the brand (including the truck’s kitsch CrabWalk mode). Credit a torque-rich electric motor at each axle, spiked tires and an air suspension system at all four corners.
Additionally, the SUV will sport the same classic Hummer design cues as its truckers. This includes a relatively straight windshield, wide mouth, short overhangs, and a rear-mounted spare tire. The LED headlights that span the width of the vehicle, however, clearly mark it as a different breed of Hummer. Those in the cabin of the Hummer SUV also have the opportunity to experience a fully immersive experience with the outside world. Thank the truck’s Jeep-type removable roof panel assembly that will surely find their way to the SUV. All of that styling will surely come at a cost, however, and the SUV can even break the six-figure barrier when it’s optional.
GM retired the Hummer line of vehicles nearly a decade ago after expanding the brand’s lineup to include H2 and H3 SUVs and trucks. As the new Hummer enters the market as a GMC, there is always the possibility that GM will once again explode the brand on its own. After all, some strange things have happened.
