The Hyundai Tucson is a crucial part of the automaker’s success, especially since it is the best-selling crossover (and second-best-selling vehicle overall) the company sells in the United States. . That’s why we’re more than a little surprised to see Hyundai taking such huge risks by redesigning the 2022 Tucson, which benefits from a sharp new design that elevates the 2021 Elantra’s sharp look to a new level.
The new Tucson’s progress isn’t just limited to style and design, either. Like its compact sedan sibling, the 2022 Hyundai Tucson will also be offered in hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions for the first time in the United States, adding power without sacrificing efficiency. Additionally, an N Line trim will proliferate on the Tucson in the future, joining the next Sonata and Elantra – as well as the current Elantra GT N Line and the Veloster N – to flesh out Hyundai’s sporty portfolio. The Hyundai Tucson will go on sale in Korea this month as a 2021 model, but it won’t arrive in the United States until mid-next year in 2022.
Hyundai Tucson 2022 Design: very chic
There will be no confusion between the Tucson 2022 and its predecessor thanks to descriptors provided by the company such as “parametric dynamics” and “kinetic surface details of the jewel”. Regardless of the wording, the grille receives an unusual triangular texture that reflects from right to left, clearly drawing inspiration from the Elantra and Sonata. But unlike sedans, the Tucson’s headlights are integrated into the grille opening, using LED elements camouflaged in the front when not illuminated. Hyundai doesn’t have any images of the vehicle with the lights off, but we think it must look rather aggressive when parked.
The side profile betrays Elantra’s clear intentions, with irregular shapes of diamonds and triangles throughout. There’s plenty of positive and negative space too, with curved front and rear fenders and a long, jagged character line that protrudes from the recessed lower doors. Angular wheel arches and rocker panel appear in chic crossover black plastic, all nicks and creases. Meanwhile, the long, relatively flat roof is done up in contrasting black, with an arched piece of chrome trim giving the Tucson a lower and sleeker look than it actually is.
The most prominent of the Tucson 2022’s rear end is a blade-shaped set of tail lights that could just as easily have been inspired by a farm plow. Suspended from a full-width LED bar, the quad taillights break down further by means of tiny triangular elements that disappear when not illuminated. The lower rear bumper trim gets a unique diamond texture that seems hidden behind a fake rear skid plate. Hyundai cleaned up the appearance of the 2022 Tucson by hiding the rear window wiper under the roof spoiler, controversially moving the brand’s oval H badge to the glass.
Conventionally attractive, the new Tucson isn’t, but there’s no denying its presence. Hyundai claims the design emphasizes the distinct identity of the SUV in a crowded segment, and there’s no denying that logic – no one will mistake this for anything other than a Tucson.
In addition, the small crossover also stands out from other Hyundai models. It shares some design themes with the Elantra, but the avant-garde Tucson is nothing like the graceful Palisade and Santa Fe or the brave Kona and Venue. The interior of the 2022 Tucson takes a slightly less aggressive approach, though it’s still clearly a modern Hyundai. The driver sits behind a tiller-shaped steering wheel, similar to that of the Sonata, and two bands of silver trim surround the driver and front passenger spaces, giving the cabin a dual cockpit appearance. A flat dash sits atop a lower dash that curves down and away from passengers, appearing airy and open and likely alleviating claustrophobia; we’ll have to sit there to verify that impression.
The Tucson is also significantly modernized with a digital instrument cluster that detaches from the dash rather than resting in a hooded cockpit. Another gee-whiz feature is an available dual-screen infotainment system that offers a 10.3-inch screen stacked on top of an air conditioning control panel without any physical buttons. The standard infotainment system is an 8.0-inch screen that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration and two-device Bluetooth connectivity.
Consider us skeptical of this improved flat-screen setup, as capacitive touch controls are more distracting and more difficult to use while driving than conventional buttons and switches. Nevertheless, the digital dashboard and the heavy-screen center console give the new interior of the SUV an attractive and contemporary appearance.
Other improvements to the interior include car-to-home communication, which allows smart devices and lights to be controlled on the road, which would come in handy when returning home on a dark night or on a sunny day. wet summer day, for example. Also new for 2022 is an available air quality monitoring system that tracks outdoor pollution levels using a fine dust sensor. The standard engine for the 2022 Tucson will be Hyundai’s 2.5-liter inline-four, producing an estimated output of 190 horsepower (142 kilowatts) and 182 pound-feet (260 newton-meters). An eight-speed automatic transmission is the only transmission available with the base direct injection engine.
However, a 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid will bundle a turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-four with an unspecified electric powertrain, giving the electrified SUV an estimated output of 230 hp (172 kW) and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm). . That’s a bit more than the 192 ponies found in the Sonata Hybrid or the 139 in the Elantra Hybrid, which should give the Tucson some pretty expressive performance. It’s unclear which gearbox the hybrid crossover will use, but the six-speed automatic (like on the Sonata) is a decent bet. A Tucson plug-in hybrid using the same turbo four will also be offered for 2022, with range and battery characteristics still unknown.
As you might expect, the Tucson will get both front-wheel drive and HTRAC all-wheel drive, and the latter has reportedly been upgraded with more drive modes in some markets. Building on the Eco, Comfort, Smart, and Sport settings of the outgoing Tucson, the 2022 adds mud, sand and snow. The extended drive selector has not been confirmed for the US, but it would be a surprise not to see it on the list given the Tucson’s importance to US dealers.
The new SUV also includes an extensive list of driver assistance and active safety features. It’s not yet clear which will be standard or optional, but Front Collision Monitoring and Prevention with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring and Hyundai Highway Driving Assist will be available on the 2022 Tucson. Since the outgoing model offers optional front crash prevention technology, we expect the new one to become standard.
Specs of the Hyundai Tucson 2022: The Nitty Gritty
The 2022 SUV is only a few notches on the ruler taller than its predecessor in every metric. The new Tucson measures 105.5 inches between the axles, slightly improving the 105.1-inch wheelbase of the old Tuc. Ditto for the new model’s 177.2-inch overall length, up 0.8-inch from the 2021 Tucson. And a 0.6-inch increase in width brings the 2022 Tucson to 73.4 inches. A height of 65.0 inches is the smallest increase, just 0.2 inches above its predecessor. Despite the minor dimensional increases, the interior space increases significantly. Hyundai only gave in to cargo volume specs, but the 2022 model boasts 38.7 cubic feet, up 7.7 from 2021 (and nearly four cubic from Santa Fe’s larger crossover ).
On sale in the first half of next year as a 2022 model, the Hyundai Tucson is expected to cost a bit more than the current SUV.
