It’s certainly no secret that a new Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is coming. It’s probably the least kept secret among Detroit automakers today, especially as the C8.R race car showcases its engine. It’s a 5.5 liter DOHC V8 with a flat crankshaft and an exhaust note unlike any Vette you’ve ever heard. Now a new rumor could explain this sound.
The racing version of the C8 admittedly stings the spine, but according to Motor trend, the road Z06 will reach for the stars with a limit of 9,000 rpm. The magazine quotes an anonymous source for this news, and frankly, we wouldn’t blame you if you were skeptical. This is very exclusive territory for a production engine, associated with hypercars like the Porsche 918 and the Ferrari LaFerrari. Could Chevrolet really lead its raucous Corvette in the world of endless revs?
This certainly isn’t the first rumor we’ve heard about the Corvette C8, and not all are the same. Ahead of its launch, we heard that the Vette would pack a 4.2-liter V8 and be called Manta Ray. Likewise, we’ve heard that the Z06 will be turbocharged with 800 horsepower. As such, we take this latest rumor with a grain of salt, but it’s not without significant supporting evidence.
We know the Z06 has a flat-revving, flat-cranked V8. This rumor includes a power estimate of 625 horsepower, which is close to another Corvette rumor that the Z06 would make 650 horsepower. We know the engine will be naturally aspirated, so it will need serious revs to generate its power. We also know that this engine is currently producing 500 horsepower in the C8.R, and while we don’t have details on engine rpm for the pilot, it doesn’t appear to hit 9,000 rpm in the various C8.R videos we have. seen. In other words, there might be room for the V8 to run faster.
When will the truth be revealed? This is one aspect of the rumor mill that is still fairly quiet. At this point, we expect Chevrolet to launch the car next year as a 2022 model.
