After introducing the next best-selling wagon generation in Europe with the Skoda Octavia 4 Combi, the Volkswagen group is now launching an updated version of the most popular SUV in the Old Continent. The mid-cycle update for the Tiguan is more than the usual facelift because it brings an extension to the family of models with the introduction of eHybrid and R.
To better show the electrified and efficient derivatives, VW has published some videos which allow us to get to know the newcomers. In addition, the regular Tiguan is also featured in the R-Line sport specification. Of the three, we would obviously prefer the full R model, but the other two models also have a lot to offer.
We would say that the Golf-esque design inspiration fits the Tiguan perfectly, and while it is far from the most exciting compact crossover, it is a huge commercial success. It is the best-selling model in the VW group, with around 911,000 units produced in 2019, so the company had to make sure that the facelift would not bother too much with an already profitable recipe.
From matrix LED headlights to touch-screen air conditioning controls like the Arteon 2021, the revamped Tiguan offers many new high-tech accessories. The advanced adaptive cruise control can now operate at speeds of up to 130 mph (210 km / h), while infotainment is in fact the Group’s new MIB3 system with 10 times the computing power of the old configuration.
With the complete facelift for the Tiguan, VW also adds an optional new 480-watt Harman Kardon audio system and a sophisticated steering wheel with touch controls. Under the revised skin, you’ll find the company’s most efficient gasoline and diesel engines, with VW declaring that its latest TDIs are “among the cleanest combustion engines in the world”.
The most important novelty for amateurs is the 316 horsepower engine for the Tiguan R, a 2.0-liter turbocharged unit generating 310 foot-pounds (420 Newton meters) and shared with the Arteon R and the next Golf A. The engine operates with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and a new 4Motion system with selective wheel torque for exceptional handling and grip.
While the Tiguan R could come to the United States, the eHybrid is not. The plug-in hybrid with an electrified configuration adopted from the GTE versions of the Golf, Passat and Arteon offers a range of 31 miles EV and can reach 81 mph (130 km / h) without sipping petrol.
The revised Tiguan will go on sale in Europe this fall, with the longer Allspace probably not far behind.
