Hanover, September 2, 2020 – Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles presents the world premiere of the new Caddy California. Every detail has been redesigned, redesigned and redesigned – and yet unmistakably the successor to the multifunctional Caddy Beach. A cleverly designed compact van and motorhome crossover. Its name says it all: California. It stands for innovative detailed solutions which, like the T3, T4, T5, T6 and T6.1, have made the California the most popular motorhome in the world. With the Grand California, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles transferred the Californian “multi-tool” philosophy to the vehicle class of the Big Crafter in 2019. Now in 2020 the new Caddy California makes its debut in the compact motorhome segment. . So now there are three California models – a family of RVs for every budget, every trip and every adventure.
The Caddy California is based on the new fifth generation Caddy. It is therefore the first motorhome to use the design advantages of the Modular Cross Matrix (MQB): latest technology and increased space. The Caddy California, with a length of 4,501 mm, will be launched before the end of the year. A version with a longer wheelbase will follow in 2021 (length: 4853 mm). The back impresses with cleverly thought-out camper van fittings down to the smallest detail. These include a new folding bed. With its box springs and a high-quality mattress, its construction offers the same level of sleeping comfort as the beds of the T6.1 California and Grand California. Measuring 1,980 x 1,070 mm, the bed is very large. Folded, it reduces to a third of its length and sits compactly above the trunk. While on the previous model the second row of seats was part of the bed construction, that is no longer the case now. Before the trip, the second row seats can therefore be removed very easily. Here too, the Caddy California offers a lot more storage space.
New mini-kitchen makes the compact motorhome even more versatile
The Caddy California’s optional mini-kitchen is a new feature, highlight and USP in this class of motorhome. Hinged to the left wall of the cargo space under the bed, when the tailgate is open, it can be pulled back. The hatch thus also provides protection against rain during cooking. The fact that the kitchen is used from the rear of the vehicle also gives optimal access to full standing height. The new mini-kitchen consists of two sliding parts. A single hob gas cooker is integrated in the upper part, including a windshield and a practical shelf. the
the lower sliding part contains a cutlery tray and additional storage space for kitchen utensils and provisions. In the rear part of the kitchen there is a securely locked box (with floor vent) for the gas cylinder (filling weight approximately 1.85 kg). With the mini-kitchen on board, the Caddy California is “honored” with type approval as a motorhome.
With 1.4 m2 panoramic roof for the first time
The Caddy California can optionally be configured with a large panoramic sunroof. At night, the 1.4 m2 glass roof opens up a view of the stars and by day floods the interior with light. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has further improved the practical storage bag system on the rear side windows, which can accommodate items weighing up to five kilograms per side. The curtain system has also been perfected. In bright, neutral designs, the curtains for the front side windows and the rear window are again secured by magnets sewn into the fabric. The rear side windows, on the other hand, are covered by storage bags. For the windshield and panoramic sunroof, other fixings are used in addition to magnets.
Smart, detailed solutions add perfect touches for camping
New ventilation openings with integrated mosquito netting for the driver and front passenger door – held in place by the side windows and the door frame – optimize the climate in the living space of the campsites. A new system with transparent dimmable LED spots provides with its warm white light individual brightness settings above the bed, while in the open rear hatch LEDs also produce good illumination. Two camping chairs and a camping table – classics that are both light and practical – can be quickly stowed away in a redesigned bag under the bed.
New tent system turns Caddy California into a family motorhome
Also new: a new modular tent system1, which can be connected to the Caddy California. As it is self-contained, it is a tent system which can also be used separately, without the Caddy. If desired, the tent can be extended by adding a sleeping cabin. It increases the size of the living space to create enough space on the pitch for a family and all of their camping gear. Two people sleep in this case in the Caddy California and two in the new tent. Thanks to its “ pneumatic posts ”, it is quick and incredibly easy to set up. Large windows, which can also be fully opened, provide plenty of light throughout the day.
Latest generation high-tech infotainment
Thanks to MQB, new technologies are entering this model range. The interactive interfaces with the driver and front passenger consist, for example, of the new “ Digital Cockpit ” (optional fully digital instruments) and radio and infotainment systems with screens up to 10 inches. The merger of the “Digital Cockpit” and the 10-inch Discover Pro superior navigation system creates here a new digital landscape of indicators and controls: the “Innovision Cockpit”. Via an online connectivity unit (OCU) with integrated eSIM, the infotainment systems can access the online mobile services and functions of “Volkswagen We”. The new Caddy California is therefore always connected.
New ‘California on Tour’ app serves as a convenient travel companion
The new free “California on Tour” app fits seamlessly into Caddy California’s world of digital services. Developed for Apple and Android smartphones, the app provides a wealth of information, including on campsites and locations, camping businesses, water and waste disposal stations, all kinds of leisure activities (like bike rentals and things to see) and Caddy California functions. The app can be used with all VWCV motorhomes.
Assisted driving and maneuvers
New technology highlights of the Caddy California include progressive driver assistance systems such as Travel Assist – a system for partially automated driving across the entire speed range. Equally innovative: Trailer Assist for partially automated and therefore extremely easy maneuvers with a trailer. In all, 19 different driver assistance systems will be available for the Caddy California.
Durable engines and optional all-wheel drive
The Caddy California’s new turbo diesel (TDI) engines are particularly durable. Thanks to a double SCR catalytic converter and double injection – twin
dosage – AdBlue facilitates, nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions are considerably reduced compared to the previous model. At launch, TDI engines will be available in two power levels: 55 kW (75 PS) and 90 kW (122 PS). The efficiency of the TDI engines is further improved by the new exterior design of the Caddy California. Base note: the cw value (previous model: 0.33) has been reduced to 0.30, a new benchmark for this kind of vehicle. An important thing to know for anyone who enjoys camping off the beaten track is that, as was already the case with the Caddy Beach, the Caddy California will also be available with all-wheel drive (4MOTION) as an alternative to the standard. Front-wheel Drive.
