At the end of June, Ram confirmed that he would reveal the 2021 1500 TRX this summer, and today the automaker set a date – August 17. The production road for the TRX began in 2016 when the rugged off-road pickup was just a concept. . It took a few years before Ram gave the model a boost, but the Ford Raptor will now have a real contender after a decade without a challenge.
The powertrain will make headlines when the TRX debuts. Ram is expected to wrap the Hellcat’s supercharged 6.2-liter V8 under the hood, producing at least 707 horsepower (527 kilowatts), although it can produce up to 797 horsepower (584 kW) like the Challenger Hellcat Redeye. There will also be less powerful (read: more affordable) versions that could use the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 (with or without hybrid technology) and the 3.6-liter V6. An eight-speed automatic will likely be the only gearbox available.
But power is only part of the appeal of the TRX. If it hopes to compete with the Raptor, it will need a rugged suspension and high-performance all-wheel drive. The TRX is expected to come standard with part-time two-speed four-wheel drive. Expect adjustable suspension and steering, which will feature varying levels of feedback and stiffness, while we hope for an electronically locking rear differential. The truck is also rumored to have a drive mode selector that will alter stability control, throttle sensitivity, shift points, and more.
Luckily, we’ll have all the details next week so we can compare them to the Raptor. Production of the all-terrain van is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of this year. This should get the TRX to hit dealerships next spring, although that may change. We can’t wait to see the TRX line against the Raptor for a proper comparison. The reveal takes place at noon on Facebook and YouTube.
