New for the Porsche Taycan: Plug & Charge, on-demand functions, head-up display
Faster sprints and more convenient loading
Stuttgart, Germany. The model year change in October will bring many new features to the Porsche Taycan. The new Plug & Charge function allows convenient charging and payments without the need for cards or an app: insert the charging cable and the Taycan establishes an encrypted communication with the Plug & Charge compatible charging station. As a result, the charging process starts automatically. Payments are also processed automatically.
Other innovations include vehicle functions that can be flexibly booked online (Functions on Demand, FoD), a full-color head-up display and an on-board charger with a charging capacity of up to 22 kW. In the future, the adaptive air suspension will feature a Smartlift function.
The acceleration values of the Taycan Turbo S have also been improved. With Launch Control, it now sprints from zero to 200 km / h in 9.6 seconds, decreasing the previous time by 0.2 seconds. It covers the quarter mile in 10.7 seconds (previously 10.8 seconds). As before, the Taycan proves its performance several times in a row without any drop in performance, which is typical of a sports car.
The fully updated electric sports car will be available to order from mid-September and in Porsche centers from mid-October.
Intuitive display system and intelligent chassis
A full color head-up display is now available as an option. This projects relevant information directly into the driver’s field of vision. The display has been divided into a main display section, a status section, and a section for showing temporary content, like calls or voice commands. A navigation display, power meter, and user-defined view can also be selected as presets.
Thanks to the new Smartlift function, fitted as standard with adaptive air suspension, the Taycan can be programmed to be automatically raised in certain recurring sections, for example at speed bumps or on driveways. The Smartlift function can also actively influence the driving height of the vehicle on motorway journeys by adjusting the vehicle level to the best possible compromise between efficiency and driving comfort.
A 22 kW on-board AC charger is now also available as a new optional equipment. With this device, the battery charges in half the time of the standard 11 kW AC charger. This option will be available at the end of this year.
Flexible upgrades after purchase with Functions on Demand (FoD)
Through FoD, Taycan drivers can purchase a variety of convenience and assistance features as needed. What makes this approach special is that it also works after purchase and for the original sports car configuration. Thanks to online and live updates, there is no need to visit a workshop. The Porsche Intelligent Range Manager (PIRM) is already available as FoD. Power Steering Plus, Active Lane Keep Assist and Porsche InnoDrive will now be added as additional FoD functions.
Customers can choose to purchase the respective feature for their Taycan or to subscribe on a monthly basis. Customers get three months of testing if they opt for a monthly subscription. After registering, selecting the desired function (s) in the Porsche Connect Store and, provided a connection can be established, the Porsche backend sends a data packet to the Taycan via the mobile phone network . Drivers are informed of the availability of such a data package by Porsche Communication Management (PCM). Activation then takes a few minutes. A notice appears on the central display after successful activation. With the change of model year, four features can be purchased and three are available as monthly subscriptions.
Active Lane Keeping Assist keeps the vehicle in the center of the lane with continuous steering intervention, even in traffic jams. InnoDrive individually adapts the speed to the conditions ahead, such as speed limits, turns, roundabouts, situations where you have to give in or stop, all just like a typical sports car. Both functions are available for an additional 19.50 euros per month or 808.10 euros each as a purchase option.
With route guidance active, Porsche Intelligent Range Manager (PIRM) operates in the background, optimizing all system parameters to achieve the highest levels of comfort and the shortest journey time. This feature costs 10.72 euros per month or is available for a one-time fee of 398.69 euros.
Power steering Plus operates based on vehicle speed. It reacts directly and precisely at high speeds and provides more solid steering support at lower speeds. This on-demand feature is available for a one-time fee of 320.71 euros. It is not available as a monthly option. All prices are recommended retail prices for Germany, including 16% VAT.
Even more convenient charging
Another new feature is charging while preserving the battery. It can limit the charging capacity at appropriate charging points (e.g. Ionity high power charging stations) to around 200kW, when customers plan to take a longer break. This extends battery life and reduces overall power loss. Drivers can select load while preserving battery function on the center display. Of course, if customers choose not to use this option, a charging capacity of up to 270 kW remains available in the high-power 800-volt charging stations.
Additional new smart charging functions are available with Mobile Charger Connect and Home Energy Manager. These include the Power Guard function, which is now able to avoid overloading the household connection, regardless of the phase, as well as an optimized charge with the energy produced locally. Use this feature to charge the Taycan using locally produced solar energy in a targeted process. Once the freely configurable minimum battery charge level has been reached, the system only consumes solar energy which is not used by the building.
Plug & Charge simplifies charging: Taycan drivers simply need to plug in the charging cable and charging is in progress. Authentication data is stored in the vehicle. As a result, the charging station automatically identifies the connected vehicle. The ISO 15118 standard guarantees that communication between the infrastructure and the vehicle is inviolable. Payments are also processed automatically. Plug & Charge is already operational in Ionity charging stations in Germany, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Italy and the Czech Republic. Twelve more European countries will follow in early 2021. In the United States and Canada, Plug & Charge will also be available from Electrify America and Electrify Canada at numerous charging points from early 2021.
A wider choice of colors
The 2021 model year features a selection of seven new exterior paint colors: Mahogany Metallic, Frozenberry Metallic, Cherry Metallic, Coffee Beige Metallic, Chalk, Neptune Blue and Ice Gray Metallic.
The Carbon Sport Design pack is available for all versions of Taycan. It includes such items as carbon fiber inserts in the lower front section and in the rocker panel trims, as well as carbon fiber fins on the rear diffuser.
Digital radio now as standard. Digitally broadcast radio stations in DAB, DAB + and DMB audio formats offer significantly better sound quality. Porsche has also improved the standard equipment in terms of connectivity. Apple® podcasts can now be selected as an individual media source.
