A new Mercedes S-Class is still a big deal, so we’re patiently waiting for the envelopes to come out of the W223 eventually. We now have some preliminary details to put in the spotlight thanks to a report published by the German magazine Mercedes-Fans after talking to development manager Jürgen Weissinger. He admitted that obstacles to development corroborated by the coronavirus epidemic had postponed the world premiere several times, but the revamped S-Class will finally be ready for an official start in early September at his home in Sindelfingen.
The development of the new generation S started in 2015 when work started on a new platform which will eventually have repercussions on the less important members of the range. You can imagine that creating new foundations for a flagship car is extremely expensive, but Mercedes will spread the costs because “many future models” will share the material, ranging from the hull and safety systems to the seats and controls of air conditioner.
We also learn from Weissinger that the new S-Class has been developed to offer both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations, as well as the usual AMG and Maybach derivatives. Not only will the V12 live to see another generation, but it will also be associated with 4Matic for the first time. While the chief honchos initially planned to drop the power plant, the engine with a dozen cylinders remains in place. However, with the AMG S65 not coming back, that means the V12 will only exist in the Maybach and perhaps the Guard armored versions that are expected by mid-2021.
Although the sales bread and butter will come from mild hybrid six and eight cylinder engines, the next S-Class will again be offered with smaller four-pot powertrains in some markets, but not in Europe or North America . The smaller engines will be available primarily in markets where the higher engine taxes are high, as evidenced by the Chinese 1.5 liter CLS 260 we recently discussed.
Despite rumors of the disappearance of the standard wheelbase model, the new S will again be offered with a choice between three wheelbases: standard, long and extra-long Maybach. We won’t be too surprised if there is going to be a new Pullman, but that remains to be seen. Weissinger also revealed that the engineers had set up a steering system at the rear wheels to reduce the car’s turning circle, which is good to hear given that the wheelbase has been stretched an additional four centimeters (1.57 inches). ) compared to the outgoing model.
At launch, Daimler’s flagship model will offer a level 3 semi-autonomous driving system, with a level 4 configuration programmed to arrive later in the model’s life cycle. In addition to the already confirmed electric EQS, there will be several plug-in hybrid versions with electric ranges of up to 62 miles (100 kilometers). Another treat shared by Weissinger is the slightly smaller footprint of the EQS, although it should be just as spacious inside once you get rid of the oily bits associated with an ICE powered car.
