2021 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series Revealed: Big Power, Bigger Wing

Affalterbach. The most powerful AMG V8 engine ever, the most expressive design, the most sophisticated aerodynamics, the most intelligent mix of materials, the most distinctive driving dynamics: For the new Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series (combined fuel consumption 12.8 l / 100 km, combined CO2 emissions 292 g / km)[1], the Affalterbach designers have done everything possible for the art of automotive design. The new super sports car perfectly embodies the brand’s rich tradition in motorsport, as well as its many years of expertise in the development of complete vehicles that impress in all respects. The result is 537 kW (730 hp) of power from a V8 engine with a “ flat ” crankshaft, combined with active aerodynamics and a design that flows directly from the current AMG GT3 racing car.

At Mercedes-AMG, the Black Series has been synonymous with a very special type of car since 2006: without sporting compromise, with an expressive design and the most coherent transfer of technology from motorsport to mass production. Black Series models are exclusive automotive rarities. They were not developed to collect dust in collectors’ garages, but for high speed use on race tracks, although they are approved for roads. The AMG GT Black series represents a new highlight of this tradition: it is the most powerful Mercedes-AMG with an engine of the V8 series.

In order to focus on redefining the super sports car, engine specialists at Affalterbach have once again extensively developed the proven 4.0-liter twin-turbo unit – although it is already renowned for its excellent handling, its power delivered and its torque progression. The specifications were clear: much more power than the previous flagship model of the AMG GT family, an even more agile throttle response, maximum torque – all of which meant that a radical change was needed in the form of a new crankshaft “ flat ”.

Different V8 engine designs

The design of a V8 engine gives designers plenty of room to play with in one key element: the layout of the crank on the crankshaft. This influences the characteristics of the engine. There are generally two variants in V8 engines: the “ transverse plane ” where the cranks of the four pairs of cylinders are at an angle of 90 degrees to each other, which AMG has used in all previous V8 engines, or the “ flat crankshaft ”, where all the cranks are on the same plane with an offset of 180 degrees (“flat plane”).

If you look at the front of a crankshaft with a transverse plane, you will be able to identify the cross which gives it its name. The advantages of these crankshafts are superb fluidity and high torque at low rotational speeds. Another characteristic of the cross-plane V8 engine is the characteristic sound. In order to optimally use the displacement and therefore the performance potential in the case of the 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo engine, AMG engineers essentially moved the exhaust side in the hot internal V of the two rows of cylinders of the V8 engine. .

Gas columns oscillate evenly for even more power

Another way to increase performance is to use a “flat” crankshaft. In the V8 flat engine, it looks like a four-cylinder in-line model – with the exception of the larger cranks, which each have two connecting rods in the V8. Ignition in the flat V8 switches from one row of cylinders to another, further improving the gas cycle. The typical firing order with a 180 degree crank angle offset is 1-8-2-7 4-5-3-6. This creates columns of gas oscillating uniformly in the exhaust and intake side, the resonance of which can easily be used to increase performance. An even greater benefit is a more agile accelerator response.

Mercedes-AMG’s most powerful V8 engine

The new GT Black Series engine can be based on the 4.0-liter AMG twin-turbo V8 engine with dry-sump lubrication, but has received the new internal code M178 LS2 due to numerous modifications. It reaches 537 kW (730 hp) at 6700-6900 rpm and delivers a maximum torque of 800 Nm at 2000-6000 rpm. The new camshafts and exhaust manifolds are adapted to the new firing order and further improve the gas cycle.

The two twin spiral exhaust turbochargers are mounted in anti-friction bearings, as in the high-end AMG GT Coupé with four doors, which further optimizes the throttle response. However, in the Black series, the turbochargers received a larger compressor wheel, which means that the two can supply a total of 1100 kg of air per hour. For comparison: The figure is 900 kg / h for the AMG GT R. 7000 rpm is not critical because a continuous speed, the speed is limited to 7200 rpm. And the larger intercoolers ensure they always keep the temperature of the charge air in the best possible range. The unique status of the new engine is also reflected in the engine badge, which is kept in black.

0-200 km / h in less than nine seconds

What does the engine do for the AMG GT Black Series? It gives it a completely independent character, which is reflected not only in the type of power supplied, but also in its very particular sound model. And it provides very impressive driving performance: the two-door vehicle pulls from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.2 seconds and 200 km / h in less than nine seconds. The maximum speed is 325 km / h.

Modified AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7G transmission

Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via the seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7G dual-clutch transmission, which is located on the rear axle in a transaxle arrangement for optimal weight distribution, as is the case for all AMG GT models. It has been modified for use in the AMG GT Black series and has been adapted to increase torque by 800 Nm. The previous limits governing team performance and response time have been extended, making them more suitable for tracks race.

All of this translates into very different driving characteristics, because not only is the throttle and engine response more agile – so are the driving programs, starting characteristics and gear changes. The Race Start function is also even more impressive, thanks to the increased starting speeds, more sensitive wheel slip control and sports tires adapted to the circuit. In addition, the transmission cooling has been adapted to the most stringent requirements and the transmission ratios have also been slightly modified.

The “torsion tube” creates the connection between the engine and the transmission. It is made of carbon fiber and, at only 13.9 kilograms, is about 40% lighter than its aluminum counterpart already optimized in weight in the AMG GT. As a structural component of the transaxle transmission, it creates an extremely rigid connection in bending and torsion between the engine and the transmission. It allows a very direct connection of the transmission which is favorable to driving dynamics and also plays a role in the balanced weight distribution of the vehicle. The drive shaft that rotates inside is also made of light carbon fiber.

Sophisticated aerodynamics for incredibly high driving dynamics

The sophisticated aerodynamics not only contribute significantly to the high driving dynamics and stability on fast circuits. As with the AMG GT R and AMG GT R PRO, aerodynamics experts and designers have worked closely together, because “form follows function” applies more than ever in the case of the Black Series.

The similarity to the AMG GT3 and AMG GT4 racing cars is visually and technically stronger than before. It starts already with the considerably larger new radiator air intake that comes directly from the AMG GT3 racing car. The radiator trim has vertical spacers in dark chrome, because now that the wheel arch coolers are also supplied with air directly via the central inlet, there is no longer any need for the two additional outside air intakes in the front apron. Sickle-shaped cops optimize the air flow here, which not only increases the downforce on the front axle, but also improves brake cooling. The “air curtains” control and direct the flow to the wheels. With the cops in front of the wheels, this reduces the drag coefficient and increases the downforce. The new design language therefore combines maximum fresh air efficiency with lower air resistance and an increased level of downward support at the front.

The carbon fiber front splitter has two manually adjustable settings (Street and Race – Race exclusively for use on race tracks) and can therefore be adapted to meet various track requirements. When deployed forward (Race position), a front diffuser in the shape of an inverted wing profile is then created under the front section. Depending on the driving speed, this element is further lowered by the increase in negative pressure, which considerably accelerates the air flow on the underbody, creating a “ Venturi effect ”, which also brings the car closer to the road. and increases the support force at the front axle. The driver can feel the benefits of steering: the Black Series can be steered even more precisely when cornering at high speed and has even better directional stability. Especially in fast corners and under high lateral acceleration, the vehicle offers an agile response with clear feedback from the steering wheel – while remaining easily controllable at all times. If the front diffuser is in Race position, the bearing force on the rear axle can also be increased by the new concept of rear aerodynamic profile.

Hood with two large exhaust air openings improves aerodynamic performance

Another direct derivative of motorsport is the new carbon fiber hood, with two large exhaust air outlets made of black carbon surfaces. The large outlets guide the hot air, which is supplied by the diagonally positioned cooling pack, out of the engine compartment. This technology is also directly derived from motorsport and increases the overall downforce. At the same time, the air resistance is reduced and the mass air flow for cooling the engine is optimized. The air is also specifically guided around the A-pillars and the rear side windows, where it increases the efficiency of the new rear wing concept. The perfectly integrated awnings (ventilation slots), with five fins in the body color and the exhaust air openings behind the wheels in the carbon fiber front fenders, help to increase the downforce on the front axle thanks to efficient ventilation of the wheel arch. The air circulating around the vehicle is also optimized by the new, significantly larger and wider side sill panels with black carbon fiber elements, which blend into vertical blades at the front and rear. Additional cooling air ducts are integrated into the side sill panels for cooling the brakes on the rear axle.

Two-stage aft wing concept

The rear view is characterized by the new rear apron with a large diffuser, two rounded double exhaust linings on the left and right outside, a ventilation of the side wheel arch and the innovative concept of rear aerodynamic profile. The two aerodynamic blades are made of carbon fiber, can be adjusted mechanically and therefore adapted to different track conditions. The second blade, positioned lower, has been made particularly small and narrow because it is ideal for air arriving from the front of the car. The light but robust carbon fiber aerodynamic supports, painted in matt black and specially designed on the basis of in-depth simulations also increase aerodynamic efficiency. They are bolted to the carbon fiber tailgate, which is also black.

Another fascinating detail: the movable flap in the upper blade. This active aerodynamic element is electronically adjusted by 20 degrees, depending on the driving situation and the AMG DYNAMICS mode selected, and improves the longitudinal and transverse dynamics. In the flat position, it reduces air resistance, to help reach top speed faster. In an inclined position, the flap improves braking performance and stability when cornering thanks to an increased bearing force on the rear axle.

Four different activation strategies can be executed, depending on whether AMG DYNAMICS Basic, Advanced, Pro or Master has been selected. Some of these strategies also involve recognition of driving dynamics, for example Master: the flap is continuously tilted and extended up to 250 km / h. When the speed exceeds 250 km / h, it retracts in order to reduce air resistance and thus reach top speed more quickly. However, if the driver brakes suddenly or goes into a bend, the flap immediately returns to the deployed position in order to optimize braking and cornering thanks to increased downforce and air resistance. The flap can also be retracted or deployed by the driver using a separate button in the center console.

Almost complete paneling on the underbody

The detailed aerodynamic work also includes the now almost entirely paneled underbody, which must not only meet aerodynamic but also thermal (heat dissipation) requirements. The flat underbody is fitted with specially designed longitudinal fins. These air channels have been meticulously optimized to ensure optimal air flow to the rear diffuser. The whole housing accelerates the air flow, considerably increasing the support force. All measurements are coordinated and interact with the new concept of aft wing. The result of all these measurements is a level of support of more than 400 kilograms at 250 km / h.

Light and robust carbon fiber, as far as the eye can see

The lightweight carbon fiber roof, with a hollow center, as well as the carbon fiber tailgate with a small spoiler lip and a larger rear windshield made of thin and light glass, are all key components of the “ mix of intelligent materials ” and “ light construction ”. . Moving towards the front of the car, the glass used to make the windshield out of laminated glass is also thin and therefore light. The coiled carbon fiber transmission mount is another exclusive component of the Black series. Additional carbon fiber shear panels in the front section, underbody and rear reinforce the entire aluminum body structure, as well as the lightweight integral support and carbon tunnel cross member, making the body even more stable. The elements form a connected network and increase the high driving precision of the Black Series in all driving maneuvers. The carbon fiber shear panel under the engine is connected to the integrated support and stiffens the entire front section and steering system, making steering significantly more precise and stabilizing the front axle. The integral support on the front axle is exclusively designed for the Black series using a lightweight aluminum construction.

The standard high performance ceramic braking system with black painted brake calipers and white lettering is also characterized by its low weight and high performance. Special brake pads and discs, along with modified brake cooling, ensure optimal deceleration without discoloration as well as high-precision brake application options. Standard light alloy forged wheels also help reduce weight.

AMG coilover suspension with adaptive adjustable damping

The double triangulation concept places the wheel with great camber and pinch stability. This allows for high speeds when cornering and gives the driver an optimal road feel when cornering at extreme limits. The triangles, stub axles and hub carriers on the front and rear axles are made entirely of forged aluminum to reduce unsprung masses. The spherical bearings on the upper and lower wishbones of the rear axle come directly from motorsport. Their design means that they have no play, which means that the pinch and the camber do not change even under high loads. The AMG GT Black Series therefore allows precise steering, gives clear steering feedback and thus offers better cornering performance.

As with the AMG GT R, an AMG helical suspension with adjustable spring preload is used in the Black series, with technology that is tailored to meet specific requirements for extreme circuit use with high damping forces. The familiar motorsport technology is combined with the AMG RIDE CONTROL adaptive continuously variable damping system. The system is electronically controlled and automatically adjusts the damping of each wheel to the current driving situation, speed and road conditions. The damping characteristics are modulated quickly and precisely by two separate valves for the rebound and compression forces in the shock absorbers. These valves are new, also based on motorsport technology and react even more agile to rapid suspension movements. A harder damping rate, for example when cornering and braking, effectively reduces rolling movements. The continuously variable damping adjustment according to the current speed also guarantees the best possible contact with the road and thus improves safety, even at high speed.

The driver can also adjust the adaptive damping characteristics at the touch of a button in the AMG DRIVE UNIT or by using the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes. Three modes are available: “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport Plus”. The modified logic means that there is an even better compromise. “Comfort” and “Sport” are the right choice for public roads. In “Sport”, the damping is firmer, with a sportier body connection and less comfort – and can also be chosen for circuits if more slippery track conditions prevail due to wet conditions. “Sport Plus” is ideal for use on racetracks, because it has a special feature: the system automatically recognizes the quality of the surface of the track, that is to say if the car is driven on a flat Grand Prix course like Hockenheim or on a bumpy track like the Nürburgring North Loop. It then automatically adapts the electronic damping level in “Sport Plus”. To develop this logic, the Black Series has been adapted to a wide range of different types of tracks and the adaptation has been improved.

Carbon fiber also reduces the weight of the suspension

The front axle is fitted with a double adjustable torsion bar made of light carbon fiber. The car has this short (i.e. firm) connection as the default setting. Its counterpart on the rear axle is made of steel, is triple adjustable and saves weight thanks to its hollow tube design. From the default “central” position, it can be adjusted to a harder (short connection) or softer (long connection) level. The carbon fiber shear panel in the rear underbody supports high driving precision. This light and rigid element stiffens the rear structure and thus makes the hull even more stable. The dynamic engine and electronically controlled transmission media have also been reworked to further increase agility and provide high precision response and clear feedback.

Other suspension measures include the wide track at the front and rear and the manually adjustable camber on the front and rear axles. This means that exceptionally high camber values ​​can be defined, which are only used for the purpose of increasing performance in motorsport on looped race tracks.

A Pilot Sport Cup 2 R MO tire, specially customized for the Black Series, was developed in collaboration with MICHELIN. As is only the custom in motorsport, this sports tire is exclusively available for Mercedes-AMG in two compounds: The standard tire fitted at the factory is the MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 R MO1A with soft mixture, the sidewall side improves the silhouette of the AMG GT Black Series. A “hard compound” is also available as a leveling option for use on circuits at higher temperatures. In addition to the designation MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 R MO2, it can be identified by the tire compound available from the AMG Performance Center, with the characteristic sticker of motorsport from the French tire manufacturer. The sizes are 10 J x 19 wheels with 285/35 ZR 19 tires (front) and 12 J x 20 wheels with 335/30 ZR 20 tires (rear).

Adopt the power of new: AMG TRACTION CONTROL

For use on race tracks in ESP OFF mode, the AMG TRACTION CONTROL allows the driver to obtain individual assistance to control the immense power of the Black Series – and without any ESP braking intervention. The assistance level can be refined, offering the ideal assistance level for each driver and each track situation. The AMG TRACTION CONTROL has been widely adapted to meet the requirements of the new Black series and allows the preselection of one of the nine slip settings on the rear axle live. Control is carried out exclusively via corresponding cards in the engine electronics and without any intervention in the ESP system, as is also the case with the GT3 racing car.

It is operated via a separate setting in the center console. It can also be used while wearing racing gloves in its central position in the dashboard. Depending on the setting, the system allows more or less slip on the rear wheels – very useful in different road conditions. Level 1 is programmed for driving in the wet with high safety reserves. Level 9 allows maximum slip on the rear axle. Each setting is displayed on the adjuster itself and on the central display of the instrument cluster.

The development of AMG has a major advantage over conventional systems in that it anticipates situations using a coefficient of friction evaluator and other data processed by a control unit in a fraction of a second. . The maximum authorized slip on the rear wheels is calculated according to the AMG TRACTION CONTROL level selected. When the wheels reach this level of slip during acceleration, traction control modulates the power of the engine so that this level is not exceeded and the vehicle continues to accelerate with this specified slip. The system algorithms have been systematically developed as a dual control variable model and control not only the engine torque, but also the locking level of the electronic differential lock.

Orange as an exclusive contrasting color

The interior design underlines the pole position of the AMG GT Black series: the exclusive nappa leather is combined with the sporty DINAMICA microfiber in black with contrasting orange stitching. The newly designed lightweight instrument panel and door panels, which are now fitted with loop handles instead of conventional handles, are lined with black DINAMICA microfiber. Additional contrasting orange topstitching, matte black carbon fiber trim and the interior night set add other highlights. AMG carbon fiber bucket seats (not available in the United States, Canada, and China) combine low weight with optimal lateral support. In the United States, Canada and China, the Black Series comes standard with AMG Performance seats. The interior is also optionally available with gray contrast stitching.

AMG-specific graphics screens

The AMG GT Black series includes the fully digital instrument screens of the AMG GT family with a group of instruments measuring 12.3 inches in front of the driver and a 10.25 inch multimedia monitor on the center console. The instrument cluster offers different designs with the three display styles specific to AMG: “Classic”, “Sporty” or “Supersport”. The “Supersport” view with a central rev counter presents a lot of additional information, such as a prompt to switch to manual transmission mode, the “shift light”. The visualizations on the multimedia screen allow you to discover other functions of the vehicle, e.g. with animated presentations of driver assistance, vehicle and communication systems.

At your fingertips: display buttons in the center console

The innovative and colorful display buttons of the V-shaped center console integrate the display and control of the transmission logic, suspension, ESP, exhaust system, rear aerodynamic flap and function On Off. The TFT display buttons use intuitively understandable symbols to show their functions and are easy to use with just a tap of the finger. Since they always have a mechanical pressure point, they can also be used with racing gloves. The display buttons are complemented by two toggle switches for training programs and volume control of the audio system.

Control in an instant: the AMG Performance steering wheel

The AMG Performance steering wheel is also adopted from the AMG GT family. It is characterized by its sporty design, a flattened lower part with a very streamlined rim and intuitive use. The rim of the steering wheel is fully lined with DINAMICA microfiber, while the steering wheel badge exclusively contains Black Series lettering, as well as the AMG logo. Aluminum shift paddles for manual shifting make driving even sportier. The integrated Touch Control buttons can be used to control the instrument cluster and multimedia display by swiping horizontally and vertically.

As standard, the buttons on the AMG steering wheel also have a round controller with an integrated display, as well as two colored display buttons positioned vertically with switches. AMG training programs can be activated using the appropriate controller. The selected setting is displayed on the color LCD screen directly integrated into the controller.

The two freely configurable display buttons and the additional switches on the left side allow you to control other AMG functions directly on the steering wheel. This means that the driver can fully concentrate on driving at high speed without having to take his hands off the steering wheel. Each required function can be represented by a display icon, which the driver can set using the corresponding switch. High downforce and perfect aerobalance to increase dynamic driving properties
