2021 Mercedes-AMG E63 S Sedan, Wagon Debut Fresh Faces And Tech

Since the legendary “Hammer” of 1986, the E-Class with its superior AMG engine has been a central model supporting the heart of Mercedes-AMG. In its latest generation, the dynamics of the high-performance vehicle are combined with considerably increased comfort and complemented by a complete update of the design. The central air cooling inlet in the completely redesigned front section is significantly larger than before and now also carries the AMG-specific radiator grille, with vertical slats and a larger central star. With the flatter multi-beam LED headlights, aggressive wheel arches flared further out and the rounded hood with two electric domes, a whole new, much more dynamic appearance is created. The redesigned front bumper in a jet wing design with three large functional air intakes and a front splitter improves overall proportions and also significantly reduces lift on the front axle. The interior is also completely improved: the panoramic cockpit, the new AMG Performance steering wheel and the MBUX infotainment system with AMG-specific functions and displays clearly reinforce its belonging to the AMG family.

The eye-catching new look of the E 63 models also has technical advantages that support its changes. To ensure optimal airflow around the handcrafted 4.0 liter AMG V8 biturbo engine, including charge air cooling, the outside air intakes in the wing design are reaction is not only particularly large; they also guide the air where it is needed in a targeted manner using two transverse flaps.

“With our efficient V8 engine and variable all-wheel drive, the E 63 not only delivers exceptional performance and vehicle dynamics at the highest level, but with the latest sedan and station wagon overhaul, we have also significantly increased comfort while At the same time as the complete design update, which also helps the Affalterbach E-Class to achieve improved aerodynamic values, our customers now receive an even more attractive overall package “, explains Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Management Board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

The designers and aerodynamic experts worked closely together during development. Their knowledge not only resulted in the striking AMG style but also in the optimized aerodynamic balance – for agile handling characteristics on country roads and optimized driving stability at high speed on the highway.

Another striking visual feature is a built-in shiny black flap that spans the entire front bumper, continuing into the outer edge of the jet wing and rounding outward on the sides. The front splitter is available in Silver Shadow as standard, in glossy black (with optional AMG night group) or carbon fiber (with optional AMG I carbon fiber exterior group). Compared to a standard E300 sedan, the E 63 S is significantly more powerful and 1.1 inches wider, the wheel arches designed to fit the larger track width and larger wheels on the front axle – an additional functional advantage.

New rear design transmitting elegance and lightness

Two new flatter tail lights immediately draw attention to the rear end of the sedan. They now extend into the trunk lid, where they are visually linked to a strip of shiny chrome trim on the top. On the Wagon, this trim strip extends even further to the end of the exterior taillights. Although their shape is unchanged, the rear lights have received a new internal design to resemble those of the sedan. The spoiler lip on the tailgate of the Wagon is painted in the vehicle color or is available in carbon fiber with the optional AMG Carbon-Fiber II package.

The redesigned rear bumper highlights the large width of the sedan and station wagon and also has a positive effect on aerodynamics. The lower part is in shiny black and is elegantly structured with a strip of silver trim across the width of the car, taking up the outline of the redesigned double exhaust pipe fittings. As an option, this trim strip is available in shiny black with the AMG night unit or in carbon fiber with the AMG I carbon fiber exterior group. The 3.5-inch double trapezoidal rounded tailpipes have a matt finish in titanium with grooves inside and outside. The rear part is completed by a very shiny black diffuser, also restyled, with two longitudinal fins.

Aerodynamically optimized wheels and individual design packs

Aerodynamically optimized and painted in a choice of matt black, shiny black or shiny gray, the revised wheel offers add new reflections. E 63 S comes standard with new 20-inch 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels, also aerodynamically optimized and with a wider aerodynamic rim edge, painted in a choice of shiny gray or optional black mast. Graphite gray metallic, Cirrus silver metallic and designo Magno Brilliant Blue are new exterior color options available.

Additional individual keys can be defined with the optional AMG night package. With this set, the exterior mirror housings, the window frames and the front and rear bumper trim elements are finished in glossy black. The exhaust trim elements are also in black chrome. The AMG-specific radiator grille is also available as an option in a dark design. Exclusively available for AMG 63 series models, the exterior AMG carbon fiber group I includes a front splitter, a trim insert in the longitudinal member and a trim element in the rear bumper in carbon fiber. The AMG Exterior Carbon-Fiber Package II adds individual reflections with mirror caps and a spoiler lip on the trunk lid (sedan only) made of carbon fiber.

Refined interior with sporty accents and high comfort for long journeys

The interior combines a refined ambience and high quality materials with the characteristic AMG performance. AMG seats are upholstered in exclusive nappa leather, combine secure lateral support with high comfort for long journeys and have a specific AMG seat cover with an “AMG” badge in the front seat backrests. Additional details include nappa leather trim for the dashboard and seatbelt as well as the seat belts in gray, available with some trim. Black / titanium gray nappa leather with yellow contrast stitching is available in the range as new AMG-specific upholstery.

Another new highlight is the MBUX infotainment system with a touch screen and touchpad, intelligent voice control as well as AMG-specific displays and settings. The two screens for the instrument cluster and the multimedia screens are housed under a shared glass cover to form the panoramic cockpit. Two 12.3-inch screens are integrated on board as standard. For the display of the instrument cluster, the customer can switch between the three AMG display styles “Modern Classic”, “Sport” and “Supersport”. The “Supersport” mode is particularly striking with a central and round tachometer and horizontal displays presented in perspective to the left and right of the tachometer, creating a spatial impression of depth. Via the AMG menu, the driver can select various AMG displays such as engine data, speedometer, temperature rise, setting, G meter and RACETIMER. With individual AMG displays such as viewing training programs or telemetry data, the touchscreen multimedia display also highlights the performance-oriented configuration.

In terms of first name: “Hey Mercedes” with additional functions

The revolutionary voice control activated with the words “Hey Mercedes” is also part of the standard specification. Thanks to artificial intelligence, MBUX recognizes and understands almost all sentences in the fields of infotainment and driving, even if they are expressed indirectly. Another new feature is the ability to read weather forecasts for certain regions – in a wide variety of languages.

New AMG Performance two-spoke steering wheel

With a distinctive two-spoke design and seamlessly integrated buttons, the new AMG Performance steering wheel creates an even closer bond between operator and machine. The three rounded double spokes combine stability and lightness, and the flat lower rim of the steering wheel is a characteristic of motorsport. The AMG Performance steering wheel can be ordered in leather, DINAMICA microfiber or a combination of leather and DINAMICA microfiber and includes a standard steering wheel heater. In the rim of the steering wheel, there is also a sensor mat to detect “hands”. If the driver does not have their hands on the steering wheel for a period of time, a warning cascade begins, which ultimately activates the emergency brake assist if the driver continues to be inactive.

Perfectly integrated steering wheel buttons

The new buttons on the steering wheel are perfectly integrated into the surface of the horizontal double spokes and have a very elegant look. Aids for haptic detection in the symbol area facilitate control. The instrument cluster is operated via the surface of the left sensor on the upper spokes of the steering wheel, the multimedia display via the surface of the right sensor. The lower shelves contain the cruise control / DISTRONIC (left) and telephone / hands-free / volume control (right) controls. The standard AMG Drive Unit steering wheel buttons for activating driving programs and individually configurable additional functions include even brighter displays with new icons and are now both rounded in shape.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission can be operated by hand via the aluminum gearshift paddles located to the left and right behind the rim of the steering wheel. For even more precise shifting controls, the paddles are now slightly larger and positioned lower.

The center console includes an AMG-specific control unit with additional switches that are used to regulate driving programs, media volume, 3-level ESP®, manual transmission mode, adaptive damping system, standard AMG Performance exhaust system, ECO start / stop function and standard surround-view camera. In addition to the AMG brushed stainless steel pedals with rubber studs, door sill panels and black floor mats with “AMG” lettering, they further enhance the performance-oriented look. A wide range of high quality interior trim elements is available for further interior customization. The AMG carbon fiber trim elements give the interior a particularly sporty touch.

4.0-liter AMG twin-turbo V8 engine handcrafted with twin volute turbochargers

The AMG 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine handcrafted in the E 63 S continues to reach 603 hp and maximum torque of 627 lb-ft. It is available over a wide engine speed range from 2,500 to 4,500 rpm, thus transmitting the feeling of superiority effortlessly at each accelerator pedal position. The E 63 S sedan completes the sprint from 0 to 60 mph in about 3.3 seconds. The time from 0 to 60 mph for the Wagon is estimated at 3.4 seconds.

To ensure optimum power and response from the 4.0-liter AMG V8 engine, the two exhaust gas turbochargers are equipped with dual volute technology. This reduces the exhaust gas back pressure and optimizes the gas cycle. Thanks to the standard cylinder closure and other measures, these performance models are also very effective. When the driver has selected the “Comfort” driving program, the cylinder deactivation system is available in a wide engine speed range from 1,000 to 3,250 rpm. A special display in the instrument cluster indicates whether the cylinder deactivation system is used and whether the engine is currently operating in four or eight cylinder mode. The transition between these two operating states is immediate, quick and torque-neutral, the occupants therefore do not have to give up any comfort.

The E 63 S is the only car in its competitive segment that is equipped with dynamic engine mounts. These supports resolve the contradictory objectives of achieving as smooth a connection as possible to the powertrain for high comfort and as rigid a connection as possible for optimal driving dynamics. Dynamic supports are able to quickly and variably adapt their stiffness to driving conditions and requirements. These measures improve the precision of the vehicle when it is driven dynamically, while the smooth adjustment increases comfort.

Short transit times, high efficiency: the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9-speed transmission

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9-speed transmission is specially adapted to the requirements of these AMG performance models. The software allows for extremely short shift times and quick multiple downshifts, while the dual clutch function allows for an evocative shifting experience. A wet multiple disc starter clutch replaces the torque converter, saving weight and optimizing response, especially when accelerating or turning off.

Transmission highlights include:

  • adaptation of the gear change characteristics to the selected AMG DYNAMIC SELECT training program
  • in manual-shift “M” mode, transmission responds directly to manual driver change commands – powertrain responds precisely and executes commands almost instantly
  • temporary manual mode “M” allows immediate change to manual mode – simply by using the paddle shifters
  • automatic double declutching function when downshifting: this effect is automatically active in the “Sport”, “Sport +” and “RACE” driving programs
  • the ECO on / off function is automatically activated in the “Comfort” driving program
  • the “Gliding” function can be activated in “Individual” mode

Suspension specially developed for maximum lateral and longitudinal dynamics with increased comfort

The new models’ agility and very dynamic lateral acceleration result from the AMG RIDE CONTROL + suspension with fully compatible multi-chamber air suspension and adaptive adjustable damping ADS + (Adaptive Damping System), which guarantees exceptionally high levels of stability. Camber, driving dynamics and steering precision. Thanks to this improvement, the comfort characteristics of the suspension have been significantly increased thanks to a new adjustment and a revised elastokinematic.

A four-arm front axle design uses forged aluminum components with triangles, strut rods, and a spring arm. The independent wheel control and suspension elements allow high lateral acceleration with minimal torque. The rear axle is also independent and has been specially adjusted. The suspension thus guarantees Mercedes E-Class comfort, combined with AMG’s high levels of precision and driving dynamics.

Thanks to a set of air springs and special shock absorbers as well as the adaptive damping system, the new three-chamber air suspension combines exemplary driving dynamics with excellent road noise and tire vibration characteristics. The stiffness of the air springs can be adjusted over a wide range by activating or deactivating the individual air chambers, which significantly improves comfort and handling. There are three degrees of spring adjustment, depending on the drive program selected and the current driving situation. The spring rate is hardened automatically in the event of sudden changes in load, rapid turns, significant acceleration or intense braking, which effectively reduces roll and pitch while stabilizing the vehicle.

The adaptive damping system can be adjusted in three stages – “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport +” – to choose between relaxed comfort on long journeys and maximum performance dynamics. The rebound and compression levels are adjusted independently of each other, and the freely programmable cards allow a wide distribution between the minimum and maximum damping force. The difference between comfortable and sporty suspension settings is more refined and clearly noticeable.

AMG Performance 4MATIC + variable all-wheel drive with drift mode

All E 63 S models are fitted with AMG Performance 4MATIC + all-wheel drive as standard. This intelligent system combines the advantages of different drive concepts: torque distribution on the front and rear axles and ensuring optimum traction on all surfaces. The driver can count on a high level of handling safety. An electromechanically controlled clutch variably connects the permanently driven rear axle to the front axle. The best possible torque distribution is calculated continuously. The E 63 S can thus be driven in a variable manner continuously, from all-wheel drive oriented traction to purely rear-wheel drive. In addition to traction and lateral dynamics, the all-wheel drive also improves longitudinal dynamics for even more powerful acceleration.

It is always possible to drift thanks to a fully variable torque distribution. The drift mode integrated as standard in the E 63 S is ideal for this. This can be activated in the “RACE” driving program using the gearshift paddles, provided that the ESP® is deactivated and the transmission is in manual mode. When the drift mode is activated, the E 63 S becomes a rear-wheel drive vehicle only. The drift mode remains engaged until the driver deactivates it again.

Limited slip differential on the rear axle: optimal traction

For improved traction and driving dynamics, the E 63 S performance models are fitted with a limited slip differential on the electronically controlled rear axle. This reduces the slip of the inner wheel when cornering, without any control intervention in the braking system. The driver can accelerate faster and more powerfully out of corners. The car remains more stable when braking at high speed and the locking differential improves traction when accelerating. The biggest advantage of the electronic limited slip differential on the rear axle is the even more sensitive and proactive control, which pushes the thresholds higher and makes it easier to drive to the limits of the vehicle. ESP® three-stage with “ESP ON”, “ESP SPORT Handling Mode” and “ESP OFF” settings, works in unison with the rear axle locking differential and all-wheel drive, and is optimized for dynamic exceptional.

Direct and with clear feedback: AMG speed-sensitive steering

The speed-sensitive electromechanical power steering has a variable ratio and impresses with its precise and authentic feedback. Steering assistance is reduced at high speed and increases continuously at low speed. This means that a relatively small steering force is required at low speed, while the best possible control over the vehicle is maintained at high speed. Pilot assistance is assigned to the different stages of the AMG DYNAMICS system. The comfortable steering setting is set to “Basic”. In “Advanced” and “Master / Pro”, the driver receives more and more information on the state of the driving thanks to a more sporty steering adjustment.

Good control and fade-resistant: the AMG high-performance braking system

The large, high-performance compound braking system is reliable, fast and resistant to fading, even under heavy loads. There are ventilated and perforated compound brake discs inside measuring 15.4 x 1.4 inches with fixed six-piston calipers at the front, and 14.2 x 1.0 inches with brake calipers floating one piston on the rear axle. Additionally, an AMG Carbon Ceramic brake system is available as an option, with brake discs measuring 15.8 x 1.5 inches on the front axle and 14.2 x 1.3 inches on the rear axle.

For a personalized experience: AMG DYNAMIC SELECT and AMG DYNAMICS

With six DYNAMIC SELECT driving programs “Slippery”, “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport +”, “Individual” and “RACE”, the characteristics of the new models can be influenced at your fingertips. The range available ranges from efficient and comfortable to very sporty. Modes change key parameters, such as engine response, transmission, suspension and steering. Regardless of the DYNAMIC SELECT driving programs, the driver has the option of switching directly to manual mode, in which the gear changes are carried out exclusively using the gearshift paddles on the steering wheel. Suspension configurations can also be selected specifically as needed.

AMG DYNAMICS vehicle dynamics control is integrated into AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programs. At the “Basic”, “Advanced”, “Pro” and “Master” levels, it influences the ESP® (Electronic Stability Program) or all-wheel drive control strategies, for example. The intelligent pilot control anticipates the desired behavior of the vehicle based on driver actions and sensor data. The spectrum ranges from extremely stable to very dynamic. AMG DYNAMICS functions can also be selected individually via the buttons on the steering wheel of the AMG drive unit.

Parameters relevant to driving, such as the engine and suspension response, the all-wheel drive control strategy and the ESP® control thresholds are intelligently adapted according to the driving program. The spectrum ranges from very safety oriented to very dynamic. The “Master” mode stored in the RACE driving program guarantees optimal agility and brings out the potential for high driving dynamics for an optimal effect – for example thanks to higher yaw rates and faster pedal response. accelerator, shifting system, rear axle with limited electronic control – differential distribution or braking force of the all-wheel drive.
