2021 Mazda 3 Turbo Packs 227 HP and All-Wheel Drive

It seems that Mazda Mexico left the brand’s next turbocharged 3 earlier. Originally slated for a July 8 revelation (according to a teaser published by Mazda a few weeks ago), the latest addition to the Mazda 3 family was officially unveiled over the weekend in a video posted on the YouTube channel of Mazda Mexico and hosted by Miguel Barbeyto, president of the Mexican branch of Mazda.

According to Barbeyto, the most powerful variant of the compact model of the Japanese brand has a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder under its hood. It’s almost certainly an engine familiar to Mazda fans, as a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine is already available in models such as the CX-5 and CX-9 crossover SUVs, as well as the 6 sedan. Mazda, the new 3-cylinder forced induction of the 3 offers 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque (probably reaching 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque on 93 octane) and a six-speed automatic transmission. Better yet, the engine is exclusively coupled to all-wheel drive (the 6 is front-wheel drive only, while the CX-9 offers all-wheel drive as an option).

Unfortunately, a manual transmission is not on the menu. Finally, at least in Mexico. It is possible, although doubtful, that the car will offer a stick in the United States. That said, we expect the U.S.-spec turbocharged 3 to be offered in the same Grand Touring and Signature trim levels that Mazda will sell in Mexico. Both are new to the model and could signal Mazda’s adoption of official trim levels for the 2021 3 (Mazda is currently selling the compact sedan and the tailgate with different packs instead).

However, as in other Mazda products, they are looking for versions of the turbo 3 to favor comfort and luxury over overall performance. Expect a long list of standard features, as well as richer materials such as microsuede and real wood trim inside the premium signature.

For better or for worse, it seems that the next Mazda 3 turbo is not the rebirth of the long-dead Mazdaspeed 3. However, the additional grunt of the upcoming model, the high-end trim and the standard all-wheel drive can be tempting enough to convince some compacts – car buyers to pass the Volkswagen Golf GTI or the Honda Civic Sport and take their places. in the driver’s seat of a 3.
