2021 Lexus IS Backs That Thing Up in New Pre-Reveal Teaser
Mark your calendars, Lexus fans, because the Japanese luxury brand officially plans to unveil its 2021 IS sports sedan on June 15. Lexus has even sent a pair of teasers that show the rear of the new car. Acura recently made a similar decision with its TLX 2021 sedan, one of the IS ‘competitors.
As Lexus photos and videos show, the new IS compact luxury sedan incorporates a full-width light bar taillight style from the UX crossover SUV. Despite its all-new plain rear light, the rest of the car is fairly familiar – it would be on top of the same platform used by the current model. There are of course improvements, including a wider rear track, but the new IS will not be “brand new”, just mainly new.
We expect the same four- and six-cylinder engines powering today’s IS to be transferred to the new model, possibly with small bumps at the output. As such, entry-level models once again host a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine hood, while a 3.5-liter V6 remains an optional extra, as evidenced by the badge “350” on the trunk of the sedan. Rumors continue to circulate that Lexus may shoehorn the Lexus LS 500’s 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged 416-horsepower V6 under the updated hood of the IS. Despite its folded performance, such a model would avoid the F nomenclature which adorns the RC F with two doors and the GS F with four doors, as well as the IS F of yesteryear.
While the reworked IS sheet (and sleek rear) can help Lexus keep its sport sedan a little cool, its probably warmed mechanical tips will certainly prevent the model from properly competing with the most entertaining options in the segment, including the Alfa Romeo Giulia and the Genesis G70. Still, we hope Lexus proves us wrong. Adding the LS’s twin-turbo V6 engine to a warmer variant of the next IS might even manage to offset the drawbacks inherent in its geriatric foundations (and somewhat small for the class). Anyway, we will know more on June 15.
