2021 Land Rover Discovery Spied Hiding A Mid-Cycle Facelift

Spy photos of a camouflaged Land Rover Discovery first appeared last month. Today we have more spy photos of the SUV, although it doesn’t seem to have camouflaged a bit in the past 30 days. Instead, the SUV is covered from the waistline down, including the side mirrors, covering all the changes the automaker plans to make.

These changes will likely be minor, however. The current third-generation Discovery made its debut for the 2017 model year, and Land Rover isn’t ready to give it a whole new generation. Instead, it’s a mid-cycle refresh where the most significant changes will be kept in the front and back fascias, and even then, it won’t be a radical overhaul. We’ll likely see the reworked front and rear bumpers, modified headlight and taillight designs, and other minor changes.

There will however be more significant changes under the updated appearance. The Discovery 2021 could receive a new plug-in hybrid system which should be larger than that of the Discovery Sport and the Range Rover Evoque. It would be the company’s first hybrid plug-in, and it could pave the way for a Discovery PHEV. However, do not expect this when launching the model. It will probably come later.

Like other automakers, Land Rover is fighting toughening emission regulations in Europe, forcing companies to be aware of their fleet’s average CO2 targets. The last thing Land Rover would want is fines for non-compliance. Rumors suggest that the Discovery will receive a 48-volt system from an integrated starter-generator system that will be applied to gasoline and diesel powertrains.

Internal updates should be minor. There will be some technological upgrades, perhaps a reworked layout of the infotainment system and other visual tweaks. Tech gifts will likely include wireless charging and the smart mirror.

It’s unclear when Land Rover will reveal the refreshed discovery; however, it should be out later this year before it goes on sale in the United States sometime in 2021. Hopefully it won’t face shortages like the new Defender.
