A new Kia Sedona is imminent. Also called carnival in other markets, Kia would prefer that the people carrier be classified as a “large utility vehicle”. Whatever the name, there is no doubt about the sliding side doors and the profile that immediately identifies it as a minivan. And now we have a mix of renderings that try to preview the production model.
The renderings are from AtchaCars on YouTube, and they are based on the recent teaser sketch published by Kia. Such sketches usually exaggerate design features such as the wheels, but these renderings give a real metamorphosis to the artistic overview.
We showed the minivan from multiple angles, revealing a square shape with Kia’s prominent tiger grille at the front, flanked by narrow headlights inspired by the Seltos. The renderings even add a raised roof as we sometimes see on conversion vans.
The design doesn’t look very different from that of the current Sedona, but it should be a completely different vehicle under its updated skin. Sources tell us that the platform is the same third generation configuration shared by the Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima, and that it will have room for a hybrid system that could arrive further down the line. At launch, we expect Kia to end the familiar 3.3-liter V6 in favor of a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder.

We also think the new Sedona will be just a little bigger, although the sketch and teaser renderings don’t really represent that. It would be a small change, but a slightly longer wheelbase should translate into more interior space for passengers. More space is never a bad thing when you’re talking about a family vehicle with seven passengers.
Earlier this year, we heard that the Sedona was to debut at the 2020 New York Auto Show. This event was obviously canceled, and since then the minivan has practically dropped off the radar until the recent sketched teaser appears. We still don’t have an official word from Kia about when it will debut, but with the teaser essentially revealing the new design, expect the new Sedona to arrive sooner than later.
