2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Revealed With Shelby Parts, Bullitt Power
2004 was the last time a Mach 1 badge adorned the fenders of a new Ford Mustang. In just two years, the 2003 and 2004 Ford Mustang Mach 1 was a return to the iconic pony launched in the late 1960s. Now the supersonic ‘Stang is back for a limited series, and it brings some Shelby DNA with a modified 5.0-liter V8 under its striped hood.
Clearly, Ford takes advantage of the nostalgia for design. The graphics and stripes are very reminiscent of the original 1969 model, as are the round entrances to the grille. At the time, you would find a set of lights there, but for the Mach 2021, they are functional air scoops.
Yes, that means there is no Shaker hood this time, but during a special Mach 1 preview event, Ford reminded us that not all Mach 1s had Shakers and for this new model, an open air box and these stuff inlets provide lots of air.
“When you weigh the runway’s desire for balance in lift, putting a shovel on the hood – and the minimal impact you would get by moving the air from there to the front corner – you get better air by pulling ahead with an open air box. And you don’t have any drawbacks from an elevator perspective, “said Carl Widmann, chief engineer at Mustang. “For track performance, it was at the heart of what we wanted to do. It was a decision very early on.”

In terms of performance, we are told that the 5.0-liter V8 develops a Bullitt power of 480 horsepower (358 kilowatts). Unlike the Bullitt, however, you can get the Mach 1 with a 10-speed automatic transmission. A new Tremec six-speed manual with matching revs will also be offered, built with a gear that matches the Shelby GT350 (you can turn off the speed match, if you prefer to tailgate). Speaking of Shelby, the heat exchangers are from the GT350 and the rear axle coolers are from the GT500. The front and rear sub-frames comply with the Shelby standard; the rear valence is pure GT500, as are the huge 4.5-inch tailpipes at the rear. The suspension is improved, but at what level is still hidden.

Ford envisions the Mach 1 as a bridge between the GT and Shelby models, something with a punchy engine and skillful handling when cornering. A modern set of classic Mach 1 Magnum 500 five-spoke wheels is available, but a performance edition with optional wheels will be offered. The GT500 wing with Gurney flap will also be offered, as well as a range of low-gloss badges, low-gloss magnetic strips and orange Brembo brakes. 10 different exterior colors will be available.
Inside you will find a new start screen for the instrument cluster, a gear lever specific to Mach 1, new threshold plates and a plate with the chassis number. Recaro seats will be available, but other interior options are unknown at this time. Prices and production figures are also unknown, although we are told that the Mach 1 will be “relatively limited”.

Mach 1 returned for the 2003 and 2004 model years, blending modern power and nostalgia for Mach 1 design elements from the 1970s.
