At this point, there is not much left to hide from BMW. The new 4 series with its mega-grille is already discovered, and we have known for a long time that the hot edition M would see the same treatment. However, these new spy images are the first time that BMW has been bold in public with its test vehicles.
By daring, we mean running with nothing, except for a swirling camouflage wrap. The latest spy shots simply conceal smaller details regarding the body lines, leaving the large grille with its bisecting license plate in plain view. There is no hiding the horizontal bars that will define the new face of the M4, and if you look closely at the upper right quadrant of the grille, you will see an M4 badge hidden under black ribbon. Like it or not, this is your hot new BMW coupe.
If you are not enthusiastic about the controversial design direction, at least there is no doubt about what is going on behind this grille. Packing the six-cylinder B58 in-line twin turbocharger, power will be prolific with more than 500 horsepower (373 kilowatts) offered in high-end models. The shift will occur with a dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive will be the norm.
However, auto purists will still have the option of rowing gears with a six-speed manual transmission, sending power only to the rear wheels. This “Pure” model will not be available with the high efficiency motor, but with only 480 hp (358 kW) at the tap, we think amateurs will get by.
One thing that enthusiasts will not have to do is wait much longer. BMW has confirmed that the new M4 will debut in September. It should also be a gala, as BMW will also take over from the long-awaited M3 sedan. If you’re not a fan of the big M4 grille but desperately want the high-powered BMW experience, the M3 will carry a more traditional face similar to the rest of the current 3 Series lineup
