Not that we had any doubts, but yes, the new BMW M3 will use the same large grille before its two-door M4 counterpart. Frankly, we are still getting used to it and are trying to understand why the sedan should follow the same path as the coupe. After all, the lower 3 series models – including the M340i – have a normal kidney pair, so the look-at-me fascia of the M3 doesn’t match the less spicy 3er flavors.
Now that we’ve taken care of the elephant in the room, it looks like the prototype had the full production body and lights in the same vein as this M4 coupe that our spies caught last week. Despite the extensive camouflage, the disguise is actually quite thin, so don’t really hide much as we can see pretty much everything. From sturdy air intakes and wheel arches to the trunk lid spoiler and quadruple exhaust, you can easily say that this 3 series is at the top of the food chain.
It’s hard to say if we’re looking at the rear-wheel drive version or the xDrive model, but if it’s the latter, the prototype doesn’t have a gear lever. Indeed, BMW will associate the manual only with the RWD system, because the configuration with two pedals will be the only way to proceed if you want xDrive. A recent report indicates that the Bavarian will give priority to the tail-happy model, with the derivative AWD to arrive at a later date.
BMW teased both the new M3 sedan and the M4 coupe before a double revelation scheduled for September. The M4 convertible is expected to follow in 2021, while rumors of an M4 Gran Coupé are probably unfounded. The swoopy shape will come with great power without a combustion engine in the i4 also scheduled for next year.
The pure electric BMW i4 is said to be more powerful than the M3 / M4, rumors suggesting it could have up to 523 horsepower. For comparison, the new M3 and M4 in competition form will display 510 hp to match the X3 M and X4 M Competition models launched about a year ago.
It would also have a lot more torque, about 600 lb-ft (813 Nm) against 479 lb-ft (650 Nm), triggered instantly by electric motors. On the other hand, the electric Gran Coupé of the 4 series will weigh much more because of the batteries and, therefore, it will probably not have the same driving dynamics as an M3.
