Audi is certainly taking its time to release the big guns of the latest generation of the A3, while we are still patiently waiting for the S3. The hot hatch was previewed in February and filmed without camo last month, but it seems that the four rings are in no hurry to unveil the compact performance model. We will have to wait even more for the RS3 because logic tells us that it will be available after the premiere of the Ingolstadt take on the VW Golf R.
Fortunately, there is no shortage of spy photos and videos, which certainly makes waiting easier. New images shot by statesidepercussions at the Nürburgring shows the RS3 under the name of Sportback in the final test. Although there is nothing particularly interesting in the prototype with less camouflage, we noticed that the more disguised test vehicle seemed to have a beefier exhaust note.
One possible explanation is that the car carrying more camouflage had the RS sports exhaust system for which buyers will have to spend extra. The regular exhaust doesn’t seem too shabby either, but Euro cars with the gasoline particulate filter might not live up to what people expect from an RS car. The RS Q3 sold on the Old Continent does not impress with the soundtrack it makes, and it is the same story with its crazy cousin – the RS Q3 Sportback.
These performance SUVs and the RS3 Sportback will remain banned fruit for American buyers, but the RS3 sedan is definitely coming to the United States from. When? Audi Sport Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Frank Michl said Auto Express a few days ago, the official revelation should take place “in a few months”.
Audi Sport’s response to the Mercedes-AMG A45 S could increase power before the turbocharged in-line five-cylinder can be pushed past 400 horsepower. The British magazine claims that the 2.5 TFSI could have around 415 hp and a healthy torque of 369 lb-ft (500 Newton-meters). If the rumor mill is accurate, the RS3 will have 20 hp and 15 lb-ft (20 Nm) more than its predecessor.
Want more punch? Good, Auto Motor und Sport reports that Audi could release an RS3 performance with somewhere in the region of 450 hp. Even if that is the case, it is likely to be released later in the life cycle of the car.
