2020 Cadillac XT6 Premium Luxury Review

What does this have to do with a luxury SUV like the 2020 Cadillac XT6? Simple: familiarity, style and value for money.

You are looking for something recognizable, something you can easily get used to. Like clothing, a vehicle must feel good and meet your needs accordingly. And you must feel that, if you paid more for a luxury badge than for a consumer brand, you still got a good deal.

The behavior of the large family caddy is exactly what you expect from it: soft, imposing and isolated. However, is its execution of traditional luxury car values ​​strong enough for you to put one in your hallway?

Cadillac XT6 Driving: smooth driving, disappointing powertrain

Our tester was a Cadillac XT6 AWD 2020 with the basic kit “Premium Luxury” (the other option is “Sport”), which recalls an old-style luxury car. Thanks to a suspension that easily absorbs road imperfections, the XT6 rides comfortably; you feel like you’re in a soft cocoon. The SUV slides over bumps, but not to the extent that the vehicle oscillates uncontrollably. Stable handling complements the flexible handling of the XT6, giving you confidence to perform avoidance maneuvers. The light but precise steering adds a sense of ease, allowing you to easily move the SUV even in tight spaces. Standard 20-inch wheels wrapped in 235 / 50R20 tires add more compliance and insulation on rough roads. You could get 21-inch wheels on the Sport category, which adds 265 / 40R21 wider rubber.

The familiar theme continues under the hood where Cadillac has packed a 3.6-liter V6 310 horsepower that is shared with several SUVs Buick, GMC and Chevrolet. This naturally aspirated mill delivers just enough power, and you have to spin it to get the most out of the engine (and how many SUV drivers actually do it?). Unlike the immense low and medium revs of turbocharged competitors, the XT6 engine will not give you instant pleasure when you accelerate.

Another downside: although the nine-speed automatic tries to keep you in the power band, it lacks refinement. In some situations, such as when you ask for more of this high power, the transmission hesitates and downshifts awkwardly when you ask for a lower gear or two.

All-wheel drive systems also differ within the XT6 family: the XT6 Sport uses clutches to transfer torque to the left and right for better handling, while the Premium Luxury trim uses the brakes to maintain traction at every corner .

What does the interior of the 2020 Cadillac XT6 look like?

A spacious cabin helps make the XT6 a good vehicle for road trips, provided you fold down the third row. The first two rows offer excellent comfort, even on long journeys. If you plan to use the third row, it is only suitable for small children. In addition, with the third row in place, the cargo space is very limited.

Once on the way, good sound insulation ensures that you are isolated from the outside world. A minimum of external noise enters the passenger compartment, while the engine note never becomes intrusive, even during strong acceleration.

A luxury SUV should be your well-appointed sanctuary where you can relax during a commute or a long trip. Unfortunately, the cabin of the 2020 Cadillac XT6 is insufficient in this regard. The fit and finish are not on par with rival Lincoln Aviator, not to mention the BMW X5, Mercedes GLE or Volvo XC90 at similar prices. Many low-quality parts such as the electronic shifter and the steering rods mounted on the steering column came straight from the sister vehicles of Chevrolet, Buick and GMC. The use of haptic feedback buttons on the dashboard does not give you any satisfaction either; only frustration.

Compared to the Sport, which costs $ 2,400 more, the base Premium Luxury model has a generous chrome exterior trim. The XT6 Sport also has more standard features.

Cadillac’s CUE touchscreen infotainment system in the 2020 XT6 doesn’t take much time to learn; However, the scarcity and location of redundant hard commands means that you have to take your eyes off the road too often and for too long, even for the most basic functions (there is a set of buttons and buttons behind the speed selector, but they are not very intuitive).

The 8.0-inch touchscreen, while quick to respond, looks dated and tiny because of the massive side edges. At least the home menu has a logical layout; nothing is buried under several submenus. The optional 14-speaker Bose Performance Series audio system is crisp and well-tuned, immersing the cabin in rich sound, making it a $ 1,000 upgrade for music lovers.

Is the Cadillac XT6 worth the price?

Defining luxury depends on its values, needs and wants. For some, brilliance is important, while others favor simple elegance. Like your favorite designer clothes, the 2020 Cadillac XT6 Premium Luxury is exactly what you would expect from a large luxury SUV: comfortable, spacious and serene. Unfortunately, this familiarity can also be the weakness of the Cadillac XT6. Sure, the SUV has a comfortable ride and a spacious, quiet cabin (for the first two rows), but these features alone do not make an appropriate luxury vehicle.

Interior trim, feature content and build quality also play an important role in luxury cars, and it is in these factors that the 2020 Cadillac XT6 is insufficient. Our tester arrived at $ 70,890, including $ 15,200 in options, but it lacks features such as massage seats, which you’ll find in a similarly priced Lincoln Aviator or Volvo XC90.

In our SUVOTY reviews, we felt it was perfectly acceptable for a premium Detroit SUV to be priced in the same way as its European and Japanese luxury rivals, if the driving dynamics, interior, packaging and refinement are up to par. And while we find that the case with the Aviator, we cannot make the same argument for the Cadillac XT6.

Driven in isolation, the XT6 is adequate. But compared to leaders of similar price class, it drags by a significant margin. It’s like paying Nordstrom prices for Target clothing.
